ROME, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team secured their third road win of the season on Saturday after a 90-77 win over the Shorter Hawks.
After a scoreless first half, Zawdie Jackson led UWG (11-2, 7-2 GSC) to a masterful second half by scoring 19 points on 6-9 shooting. As a team the Wolves scored 55 points on 62.5% shooting and 50% from three in the half, leading to their 13-point win over Shorter ( 3-11, 1-9 GSC).
"Zawdie came out hunting in the second half," said head coach Dave Moore. " He did what a First Team All-League player, a guy that's one of the best players in this league does. He struggled in the first half and sat most of the half in foul trouble and then responded with 19 points in the second half to help us get this victory."
West Georgia got off to a fast start in the first half, beginning with Cole Fisher burying back-to-back transition threes that gave the Wolves a 12-0 lead, four minutes in. A three from Shorter's Grace Atchley finally got the Hawks on the board at the 15:38 mark, but six straight points from Camron Donatlan extended UWG's lead to 13. 13 would be the largest lead West Georgia would hold in the period before their offense went cold, resulting in 21-4 run, over the last 6:50, for Shorter, giving the Hawks a 39-35 lead at halftime.
West Georgia shot 42.4% from the field and 30.8% from three in the first half while Shorter shot 55.6% from the floor and 50% from three.
Jackson immediately got going in the second half as the junior converted a three-point play on the first possession. Moments later, Kolten Griffin gave the Wolves the lead with a layup which began a string of back and forth basketball as the game saw seven lead changes and five ties over the next five minutes. A bucket from Tamaury Releford gave UWG a 52-50 lead with 13:17 left to play and West Georgia would never surrender the lead again as Releford's layup sparked a 14-3 run, giving the Wolves a 66-55 lead. Shorter didn't lay down and stayed within reach of West Georgia until Jackson put the game out of reach by going on a personal 11-0 run.
Along with Jackson's game-high 19 points, Cole Fisher recorded 15 points on five made threes while Kolten Griffin added 12 points on 60% shooting.
West Georgia returns to The Coliseum on Monday as they welcome the Lee Flames for a massive GSC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
"We've got a big time challenge in front of us on Monday," coach Moore continued. "We need the student body to come out and support us."
