Softball Falls to Number Three North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The UWG softball team dropped both ends of a Wednesday road doubleheader to the third-ranked North Georgia Nighthawks.

UWG (2-10) ran into a buzzsaw that is the nation's number three team that is North Georgia (12-1). UNG extended their win streak to 11 games with the sweep.

GAME ONE
North Georgia controlled the game from start to finish in the opening contest of the doubleheader, holding West Georgia to one hit in a 9-0 game in five innings.

Sophomore Addison Sturdivant had the Wolves' lone hit, singling in the opening inning. From that point, the Wolves did not have a baserunner and had five strikeouts.

The Nighthawks got three in the first two in the third and four in the fourth to defeat UWG after five innings. Call Hardison and Marissa Thompson each pitched fir UWG with Hardison taking the loss.

GAME TWO
West Georgia's offense had more life in game two, scoring three runs on six hits, but came up short as North Georgia used a two-run fifth, and a three-run sixth to pull away late.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, Zekylah Boyd got on with a single and then took second on a UNG error. Emerson Miller then doubled to right center, scoring the first run of the day for the Wolves.

After UNG added a third run in the fourth off of UWG starter Katie Morris, the Nighthawks tagged Macy Ann McKnight for the five runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Wolves got their second run in the fifth as Madison Vandergriff singled and then stole second, only to come around to score after the throw on the stolen base attempt sailed to the fence.

Vandergriff, who finished the game 2-for-3, would add a third UWG run in the final frame, doubling home Chandler Mevis who led off with a walk. Emma Helton also had two hits in the game for the Wolves.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Heard County products Zekylah Boyd and Emma Helton both recorded their first collegiate hits on Wednesday.
- It was Madison Vandergriff's first multi-hit game of the season and the third of her career.
- Emerson Miller's game two RBI gives her four on the season which tied her for the team lead with R.J. Janke.

UP NEXT
West Georgia travels to Cleveland, Tennessee this weekend for a three-game Gulf South Conference series with the Lee Flames. The series is set to begin Saturday at 1 p.m.
