Seventh-Inning Comeback Falls Short in Series Opener

Softball Falls 5-4 to Lee in Game One

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - A seventh-inning comeback fell just short on Saturday afternoon as the West Georgia Wolves softball team fell 5-4 to the Lee Flames on the road.

Trailing 5-0 in the final frame, the Wolves (2-11, 1-3 GSC) scored four runs and had the game tying run on base, but couldn't get one more clutch two-out hit, dropping the series opener.

Lee (4-9, 1-3 GSC) took advantage of a hit batsmen and a walk to lead off the second to score three runs in the second inning. Meanwhile, Lee's Madison Barnett held the UWG offense to just one hit until Zekylah Boyd broke up the no-hit bid with a bunt single in the sixth.

The Flames then added a pair of runs in their half of the sixth to take the five-run lead into the seventh.

West Georgia went two work in the seventh as R.J. Janken was hit by a pitch, and then pinch runner Nicole Couvertiere got all the way to third before stealing home to put the Wolves on the board. Madison Vandergriff then doubled home Emma Bailey, and Izzy Pinto had another RBI double to make it a 5-3 game. Boyd's second hit of the game drove home the Wolves' fourth run, but UWG couldn't tie things up.

Katie Morris pitched all six innings for the Wolves, tossing 106 pitches and striking out four while allowing the five runs.

Boyd led the Wolves with the two hits while Vandergriff and Pinto had the other two.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Madison Vandergriff now has doubles in back-to-back games and is now tied for the team lead with four RBIs.
- It was Zakylah Boyd's first career multi-hit game.

The Wolves are back in action tomorrow in Cleveland, taking on the Flames in a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
