Softball Drops Final Two Games of Weekend Series

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The UWG softball team was swept in Sunday's doubleheader, falling in all three games of the weekend's three-game set at the Lee Flames.

In game one of the twin bill, it was a seesaw battle that saw UWG (2-13, 1-5 GSC) put up a season-high 12 hits, but come up just short. The Flames (6-9, 3-3 GSC) did just enough in game two to complete the sweep.

GAME ONE
It was a seesaw battle in the opener of the doubleheader as the game featured six lead changes and three ties, but it was Lee who came out on top thanks to a five-run fifth, clinching the Flames' series win.

After Lee took a 2-0 lead in the first, the Wolves got three in their half of the second. R.J. Janke led off with a single and after a sac bunt, Madison Vandergriff singled in a run and Emma Nixon doubled to put two on in scoring position. Heads-up base running then led to two runs as the pair came around to score on the same wild pitch.

Four singles plated a tying run for Lee in the second, but UWG jumped right back in front as the Wolves cashed in on an error and a clutch two-out hit from Rylee Green to take the 5-3 lead.

But once again, the Flames answered right back with two walks, two hits, and a wild pitch to score two runs to things up at 5-5.

Zekylah Boyd got an RBI bunt single in the fourth that gave the Wolves a 6-5 lead. A solo shot from Sidney Lee in the bottom half tied things up once again as the Flames' catcher made it 6-6.

West Georgia took a 7-6 lead in the fifth on an RBI single from Nixon, but the Flames came out for a five spot in their half, taking a commanding 11-7 lead.

UWG would add a single run in the sixth as Sturdivant led off with a walk and later scored on a throwing error.

Nixon led the offense with a 3-for-3 day with and RBI and two runs scored. Vandergriff and Nicole Couvertiere who came on as a pinch runner and remained in the lineup each had two hits as well.

UWG used three pitchers, Macy Ann McKNight, Emma Ann Howard, and Marissa Thompson with Howard taking the loss.

GAME TWO
Lee's Madison Barnett shut down the UWG offense in the series finale, pitching a complete game, four hit shutout.

But the Wolves got great pitching from Marissa Thompson and Katie Morris who combined to hold Lee to just three hits and the one run. Thompson pitched four innings and surrendered three hits and the run while Morris tossed two relief innings and struck out four.

It was a 0-0 game until the Flames scored in the fifth to take the 1-0 lead. West Georgia had hits from Addison Sturdivant, Calli Hardison, Rylee Green, and Jacelyn Lahr.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Emma Nixon had her second career multi-hit game and is the third UWG player this season to record a three-hit game.

UP NEXT
The Wolves return home next weekend to take on the Union Bulldogs in a three-game series beginning on Saturday.
