Defensive Clinic Leads Wolves over Falcons

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball picked up their first road win of the season on Saturday, after a dominating 3-1 win over the Montevallo Falcons.

UWG (8-6, 2-3 GSC) shutdown Montevallo's (5-10, 3-2 GSC) offense as the Wolves held the Falcons to 45 kills on a .104 hitting percentage en route to their second conference win of the year.

"Huge team win for us," said head coach Kara Hellmann. "We talked about being steady in all aspects of our game and we did just that. Claire stepped up and was huge for us today."

Filling in for the injured Taylor Allen, Claire Conway recorded a career-high 13 points, a career-high six blocks, and tied her career-high with three service aces.

The first set was extremely tight all the way through as West Georgia held an 11-8 lead after a kill from Sanai Young. UWG kept their lead at three thanks to a kill and service ace from Zoë LaBreche and a block from Claire Conway and Sarah Pipping until Montevallo went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 17-16. From there on out, the two teams went back-and-forth before a kill from the Falcons' Colton Thompson won the set for Montevallo, 29-27.

UWG came out the gate fast in the second set, taking a 10-4 lead to begin after back-to-back kills from Pipping. The Wolves would never let the Falcons get within six points until a kill from Macy Martin sparked a 4-0 run for Montevallo that cut West Georgia's lead to two. After the Falcons' 4-0 run, UWG responded with a 4-0 run of their own that was capped off by a block by Young and Pipping to extend the Wolves' lead to 21-15. Montevallo made a push late to get back into the set before an ace from Conway put an end to that.

Montevallo blitzed West Georgia in the third set, by taking an early 8-4 lead. UWG remained composed and responded with an 8-0 run to take a 12-8 lead in a blink of an eye. The massive 8-0 run from the Wolves completely swung the momentum as UWG continued to pour it on as a kill from LaBreche ignited a 7-1 run, extending West Georgia's lead to seven late. Montevallo made another late push as a kill from Allie Dishman began a 6-0 run that cut the Wolves' lead to one, forcing a UWG timeout. Out of the break, West Georgia used a 5-2 run to clinch the set, 25-21.

The fourth set was all Wolves as a service ace from Isabela Segoviano gave UWG a 10-5 lead to begin. The two teams then traded points before an attack error from the Falcons sparked a mini 3-1 for West Georgia that gave them a 17-9 lead. Montevallo scored points here and there but could never get close to UWG as Young's 14th kill of the match won the set, 25-16.

Young led the way with a career-high 14 kills on a .406 hitting percentage while Pipping added 13 kills.

"This was a gritty win for our program that will give us good momentum heading into another road weekend next week," Hellmann concluded.

West Georgia will be back on the road next weekend as the Wolves head to Jackson, Tennessee for a 7:00 p.m. Friday night matchup against Union before playing Christian Brothers on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
