CARROLLTON, Ga. – A six-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday night at The Coliseum as the UWG women's basketball fell 59-55 to the Delta State Lady Statesmen in Gulf South Conference action.
A tough shooting night and 16 turnovers plagued West Georgia (10-5, 6-5 GSC) on Wednesday night as Delta State (7-8, 5-6 GSC) got a road win despite missing their leading scorer to injury.
The Wolves shot just 36.5 percent from the field in the loss, posting their lowest field goal percentage of the season, and finished the game 8-for-17 at the free throw line.
Junior
Zuriyah Davis had 22 points in the loss while Delta State's MaKenzie Hill had a game-high 25.
Davis started the game out hot, hitting three three-pointers in the first quarter, scoring 12 of the Wolves' 17 in the period. Delta State led early at 2-1, but Davis' first three-pointer gave the Wolves their first lead of the game, and they would lead by eight by the horn, 17-9.
The UWG offense went cold in the second quarter, scoring early but then going on a six-plus minute scoring drought. Delta State's offense, however, did the opposite and hit five second quarter three-pointers and outscored UWG 21-7 in the second and led 30-24 at the midway point.
West Georgia chipped away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Statesmen 20-13 in the period. The Wolves did not lead, however, until the third quarter buzzer as
Katelyn Dunning heaved it from deep to beat the horn and make it 44-43.
The two teams traded baskets for the majority of the final quarter, with UWG going up by four with 3:49 to play. But back-to-back three-pointers from DSU would flip the script and the Lady Statesmen would lead by two one minute later. Delta State would never relinquish the lead, although UWG had looks from three in the final minute to tie, but could not get the basket.
Behind Davis' 22, the Wolves also got eight points from
Mykah Anderson, seven from
Sydne Tolbert, and six from
K'Nari Holliday.
Jada Powell led the Wolves on the glass with 14 rebounds.
West Georgia goes back on the road this Saturday, traveling to Mississippi College for a 3 p.m. EST contest in Clinton, Mississippi.
