JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team extended their winning streak to eight after dominating the Union Bulldogs, 93-79, on the road.
UWG (17-2, 13-2 GSC) dominated the glass as they outrebounded Union (10-9, 7-8 GSC) 47 to 35 in route to their 15
th double-digit win this season.
"This was a good road win," said head coach
Dave Moore. "We came into the game 4-2 on the road and we needed to get number five. I thought we were very good on the backboard, getting 32 rebounds and winning the glass by 12 against this team. We were able to get enough stops and finish the possession out with a defensive rebound to win."
Union came out the gate fast as they took an 8-0 lead less than three minutes in, before
Amari Davis got the Wolves on the board with a layup. Davis' bucket got West Georgia's offense going as UWG quickly erased their eight-point deficit and took their first lead of the game at the 8:41 mark, courtesy of a layup from
Tamaury Releford. Moments later,
Zawdie Jackson buried a deep contested three which completely shifted the momentum into the Wolves' favor. Jackson's three ignited a 15-4 UWG run, propelling West Georgia to a 45-31 lead at the half.
UWG shot 47.1% from the field in the period while holding Union to 33.3% from the floor and 21.4% from three.
The momentum that the Wolves had at the end of the first half, carried over to second as West Georgia quickly extended their lead to 19 after threes from Jackson and
Cole Fisher and a handful of buckets from
Camron Donatlan. With the game slipping away from the Union, the Bulldogs woke up and went 9-0 run to cut West Georgia's lead to 10 with a little over 13 minutes to play. UWG's lead remained at 10 for the next couple of minutes before a turnaround jumper from
Marlon Smith sparked a 9-0 run, extending the Wolves lead to 72-55. For the remainder of the game, it was much of the same for West Georgia as they kept Union at bay, taking a 93-79 victory back to Carrollton.
Jackson led the way with a game-high 34 points and four assists on 12-16 shooting while Donatlan recorded 19 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Off the bench, Releford finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
"I thought Zawdie and Cam were really good," coach Moore continued. "Zawdie was terrific offensively with 34 points, four assists, and one turnover on 16 shots, that's terrific. Cam didn't shoot a great percentage but he was attacking the basket and getting to the foul line as he was 8-9 from the foul line, which is big for him."
West Georgia will be back in action on Wednesday when they return to the Coliseum for a 7:30 p.m. GSC rematch with the West Florida Argonauts.
