CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team fell short in a Friday night matchup to the Jacksonville Dolphins in five sets.
UWG (9-8, 2-3 ASUN) fell short to Jacksonville (8-9, 3-2 ASUN) in an Atlantic Sun Conference matchup after going up 2-0 early in the match.
In the opening set, the Wolves jumped out to an early 10-5 lead led by
Sanai Young who contributed three kills in this early run. Jacksonville would try to extinguish West Georgia's momentum but UWG's offense was just firing on all cylinders. The Wolves would go on to win the set, 25-13.
In the second, the set was back-and-forth as there were multiple lead changes leading to both teams having no room for error.
Mary Morgan Formby would be clutch in this set by contributing two major kills to put the Wolves over the Dolphins in the second with a 25-23 win.
In the third set, Jacksonville found its momentum early and were able to silence the Wolves attempt to sweep by going on an early 12-6 run led by Breanna McDonough. McDonough would keep her hot streak going to lead the Dolphins to a 25-19 win, to avoid the sweep by West Georgia.
In the fourth set, Jacksonville's momentum never dropped off, going on an 18-8 run. McDonough and company would keep their energy high and shut out West Georgia late in the set, to tie the match 2-2 with a 25-18 win.
In the deciding fifth set, it started out as a back-and-forth battle, but Jacksonville would find their rhythm and complete the reverse sweep to win the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Offensively, UWG was led by Zoë LaBreche with 17 kills on the night and defensively by
Victoria Schmer with 22 digs.
The Wolves will be back in action on Sunday against the North Florida Ospreys with first serve slated at 2:00 p.m. at The Coliseum.
