CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team fell short in Friday Night's matchup against the Bellarmine Knights at The Coliseum.
UWG (9-10, 2-5 ASUN) struggled to contain Kylie VanHoy and the Bellarmine (6-11, 3-4 ASUN) offense as Vanhoy, recorded 46 assists on the night, where the Knights would go on to recored 61 kills on a .224 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, the Wolves and Knights would go back-and-forth with multiple ties and both teams trying to find their footing. At the 13-13 mark, West Georgia would find a spark on the back of
Ashley Barnes, who would tally up two service aces, which would allow the Wolves to go on a 7-1 run. This gave West Georgia the momentum to finish out and win the set, 25-18.
In the second set, Bellarmine jumped out to an early 6-3, lead by Natalie Bland and company but later in the set West Georgia would respond with their own 5-2 run to bring the set within two, 15-13. Natalie Bland would then find her spots to put the Knights over the Wolves, 25-20.
In the third set, the Knights came out red hot with a 9-2 lead to start the set. The Wolves tried to find momentum by going on a 7-2 run but the Knights were able to silence the Wolves offensive attack to win the set 25-21, and were able to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Wolves came out with the momentum hitting on all cylinders in the fourth, with
Mary Morgan Formby putting down two kills early for West Georgia. Bellarmine would slowly find their footing and soon take the lead to take the win in the set, 25-21 and take the match 3-1.
Offensively, UWG was led by
Alex Strating with a career-high 12 kills and defensively led by
Victoria Schmer with 21 digs.
West Georgia will be back in action in another conference matchup on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at The Coliseum.
