Wolves Drop ASUN Home Game to Queens

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Queens Royals on Thursday night in their return to The Coliseum.

Playing in their first ever Atlantic Sun Conference game at home, West Georgia (8-7, 1-2 ASUN) fell down 2-0 before fighting back to force a forth set, but Queens (5-9, 2-1 ASUN), who hit .329 in the match took the fourth set to win the match.

Queens jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the Wolves came right back, to even it up at 4-4 and take their first lead of the match at 5-4. West Georgia would never lead again, but eventually closed the gap to 24-22 after a kill by Zoe LaBreche and a block by Sanai Young and LaBreche before Queens got the 25th point to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second, the two teams went back and forth as there were nine ties, seven lead changes, and neither team led by more than three points. Queens' defense turned it up a notch, recording five blocks in the second set and held the Wolves to a .173 hitting percentage. A costly service error would turn a 23-22 deficit into set point and two points later, the Royals would take the second set, 25-23.

It was West Georgia who turned it up a notch in a do-or-die situation in set three, hitting .293 as a team. UWG was led by Alex Strating and Mary Morgan Formby who each had four kills in the set while Marley Staats and Young each had three. UWG only trailed briefly in the set, and led by as much as eight points in the set, eventually winning 25-19.

The fourth set also started as a see-saw battle until the 12-12 point of the match when Queens capitalized on UWG error and ended the match on a 13-3 run.

LaBreche led the offense with 14 kills while Staats had 13 kills and a .294 hitting percentage. Alex Strating set a career-high nine kills and a .450 hitting percentage, also a career high. Callaway Cason had 40 assists to pace the offense while Victoria Schmer had a game-high 37 digs.

The Wolves now hit the road for a Saturday showdown against Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tennessee. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
