CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team outlasted the Austin Peay Governors in a five-set battle to secure a second win in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
UWG (9-7, 2-2 ASUN) secured a second win in conference play on the road against the Governors of Austin Peay (1-13, 0-3 ASUN) in five sets.
In the beginning set, Austin Peay jumped out to a blazing hot start with going on a 10-1 run while accumulating five service aces within the set. The Wolves would try to close the gap by getting within six points, 13-7 but Payton Deidesheimer and Sarah Carnathan would not lose their momentum and continue their hot start to close out West Georgia, 25-19.
In the second set, it started as a back-and-forth battle between both teams, but the Wolves were able to light a spark in their offense and would go on a massive 7-0 run to put them ahead, 12-6.
Callaway Cason would lead this charge with contributing two service aces and adding on an assist to Alex Straiting. Austin Peay wouldn't go away easy, countering with their own 6-1 run to get them within a point, 14-13. West Georgia would silence any attempt the Governors had to regain momentum and close out the set, 25-20 to tie the match, 1-1.
The third set would be a complete slug fest between UWG and APSU with 11 lead changes throughout the set. Both offenses continued playing at a high level, but the Wolves' defense answered the call. West Georgia would go on a 7-3 run to close out the third set with producing two assisted blocks combined from
Sanai Young,
Alex Strating, and Cason Callaway. UWG would win the set 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set would resemble the first set with the Governors jumping out to an early 15-4 lead and never looking back. Carnathan would be a vital piece to Austin Peay's electric start, that would give the Governors a much-needed energy boost to secure a win in the fourth set, 25-14 to tie the match at 2-2.
The decisive fifth set did not disappoint. As UWG jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead, it looked as if West Georgia would close out Austin Peay early. The Governors would try to accumulate a few points, but the high-powered Wolves offense led by
Mary Morgan Formby,
Marley Staats, and Young would wear out Austin Peay's defense in the back half of the set. West Georgia would finish off APSU, 15-11 to win their second ASUN conference match on the season.
Offensively, the Wolves were led by
Sanai Young,
Mary Morgan Formby, and
Marley Staats who a combined 35 kills on a .376 hitting percentage. Defensively, West Georgia were led by
Victoria Schmer with 24 digs and Alex Straiting with six blocks.
"Happy to see our team gut that one out," said head coach
Kara Hellmann. "We have some things we need to clean up as a team and we will get back in the practice gym this week to prepare for another tough weekend of ASUN play with Jacksonville and North Florida coming to the Coliseum."
UWG will be back in action at the Coliseum with two home games next weekend against Jacksonville on Friday, October 11 at 6:00 p.m., and North Florida on Sunday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m.
