FORT MYERS, Fl.- The UWG soccer team fell 5-0 against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday morning.
The Wolves faced a very strong team that forced them to play defensively. UWG kept the ball out of the box as much as possible, with Hannah Garrett making excellent saves in the first half. She matched her recent career-high of seven saves in just the first period of the match.
After multiple attempts, FGCU got on the board in the 27th minute. Erika Zschuppe opened the scoring by sending the ball to the top left corner of the goal, assisted by Nele Karowski. There were no further attacking plays in the first half.
The second half did not go in favor of the Wolves. In the 56th minute, it seemed FGCU had scored again, but the goal was ruled out due to a foul. Just two minutes later, an unfortunate miscommunication led to an own goal by UWG, allowing FGCU to extend their lead to 2-0 and gain more momentum.
The Wolves struggled to regain focus, and in the 60th minute, Taylor Thomas scored with a shot to the top right corner, making it 3-0.
The Eagles continued to press, scoring one more goal to extend their lead to 4-0. Nellie Nygre found the net in the 65th minute, assisted by Erika Zschuppe. To secure the victory, Nygre added another goal in the 88th minute.
Goalkeeper Hannah Garrett set a new career-high with ten saves for her impressive performance.
The Wolves will return to action on Thursday, October 10th, in Richmond, KY, where they will face Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to watch the game on ESPN+ and follow live stats.
