CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball Team fell short in Friday night's ASUN matchup against conference leader Florida Gulf Coast, 3-1
UWG (9-14, 2-9 ASUN) failed to complete the upset against conference foe the FGCU Eagles (19-4, 9-1 ASUN) as they tied the series at 1-1 but ran out of gas the last two sets to fall in four.
In the beginning set, the Eagles jumped out to a fast start with a 5-2 lead but the Wolves were able to recover and tie the match at 8-8. Sylar English would be the driving force for FGCU's offense as she would put down four kills in the set to put Florida Gulf Coast over UWG with a 25-16 win.
The second set, started similarly as the first with FGCU getting hot early and West Georgia slowing their momentum. The Wolves trailed 10-6 before they found their groove and were able to put together a 10-2 run to take the lead,16-12.
Mary Morgan Formby and Zoë LaBreche were key contributors to this run by laying down crucial kills that would help UWG sustain their momentum to close out the Eagles, 25-22 and tie the match at one a piece.
In the third, Florida Gulf Coast would again get out to a quick lead but this time they were able to sustain their lead and silence the Wolves early with a 25-8 set win.
In the fourth, the FGCU's momentum would continue from last set as and they would close out West Georgia, 25-14 to win the match 3-1.
Offensively, the Wolves were led by
Rylee Henderson with a career-high 12 kills. Defensively, the Wolves were led by
Sanai Young,
Alex Strating, and
Callaway Cason with 11 blocks combined.
The Wolves will be back in action with a matchup with the Stetson Hatters on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at The Coliseum.
