CARROLLTON, Ga. - A late-inning comeback came up short on Saturday afternoon as the Wolves fell to the Young Harris Mountain Lions, 11-9 in the series finale.
West Georgia (3-4) outhit Young Harris (6-0) in the game, getting 15 hits to just 14 from Young Harris. The UWG pitchers gave up 10 free passes in the game to just five by YHC.
Young Harris struck first in the finale, using three singles to push a run across in the game's opening inning. They would add two more in the second on a solo shot, a double, and then a bloop single.Â
After leading them loaded in the first, West Georgia cashed in a run in the second as a Mason Cooper single and a throwing error got the Wolves' catcher to third, and Sam Ladner picked up the RBI on a sacrifice fly, making it a 3-1 deficit.
Luke Hatcher led off the third with a double to the left field corner, and then after singles from Michael Rich and Walt McConnell, Hatcher cut the Wolves' deficit to 3-2. The Mountain Lions then got a run back with an opposite field solo home run by Jackson Kemp in the fourth. Another solo shot by YHC in the fifth stretched their lead to 5-2.
Young Harris then added a single run in the sixth before a four-spot in the eighth stretched their lead to 10-8.
The Wolves then used four hits and four walks to get back in the game with a six-run eighth inning. After a walk then a double from Myles Cook, Beau Brand's pinch hit single scored a run to make it 10-3, and a ground ball double play netted another run. Jared Emory provided the big blow of the inning, a two-out grand slam to cut the deficit to two and make it a 10-8, YHC lead.
Each team got a run in the ninth, and UWG got the potential tying run into scoring position, but a lineup right at the YHC shortstop ended the game.
Hatcher led the offense with a 3-for-4 game with two doubles, an RBI, and a pair of walks. Emory finished with two hits including the eighth-inning grand slam, and Myles Cook also had two hits in the loss.
