CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team snapped their four-game losing streak, by sweeping Saturday's double-header against Christian Brothers with a 9-8 win in Game One and 9-1 in Game Two.
Â
GAME ONE: West Georgia, 9-8
Â
Seth Dudley got the start for West Georgia (5-4, 2-0 GSC) and quickly found himself in a deficit after the Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Â
UWG got a run back in the second inning, courtesy of a sacrifice-fly from
Mason Cooper that scored
Jack Witmer before CBU added two more runs in their half of the third, extending their lead to 4-1.
Â
Coach Smith went to his bullpen in the fourth inning, bringing in
Jonathan Hickman to relieve Dudley. Fresh out of the pen, Hickman surrendered a two-run homer, putting West Georgia in a 6-1 hole.
Â
Down 6-1, UWG flipped the script on CBU, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at six. The inning started out with
Luke Hatcher hitting a solo home run before the Wolves loaded up the bases, setting the stage for their big inning. Walt McConnell drew a bases loaded walk before another sac-fly from Cooper scored
Michael Rich. With West Georgia now down 6-4,
Cade Hohl came up to the plate and delivered a huge two-run single to knot the game at six apiece.Â
Â
In the seventh, UWG took their first lead of the day as Rich hit a solo home run before Christian Brothers tied the game in their half of the inning.
Â
The eighth inning looked very similar to the seventh as a sac-fly from Hatcher put West Georgia back up one before the Bucs tied the game again courtesy of an RBI-single from Cory Steinhaurer.
Â
All tied at eight in the ninth,
Jared Emory hit the go-ahead home run before
Ryan Whitener slammed the door in the bottom half, securing a 9-8 win for the Wolves.
Â
Witmer led the way with three hits while Emory and Rich picked up two hits and an RBI each.
Â
GAME TWO: West Georgia, 9-1
Â
Will Dean got the start in Game Two and pitched a gem, picking up a complete game while only surrendering one run on four hits.
Â
Sam Ladner got things started for UWG in Game Two by hitting a solo home run in the first inning. Later on in the inning, Emory hit his second home run of the day, belting a two-run shot to give the Wolves a 3-0.
Â
After Dean retired the side with ease, West Georgia's bats got right back to work as Prince delivered a two-run single to extend their lead to five.Â
Â
Both offensives were stifled in the next few innings before
Jackson Webb pushed the Wolves' lead to six in the sixth with an RBI-single. Moments later, with the bases loaded, Prince was hit by a pitch which drove in McConnell before Hatcher broke the game open with a two-run single, extending West Georgia's lead to 9-0.Â
Â
Christian Brothers got on the board in their half of the sixth with a solo home run from Ben Brocato but that's all they would get as Dean retired the next four batters to clinch a 9-1 win.
Â
Hatcher and Emory led the way offensively with two hits and two RBIs each.
Â
West Georgia will conclude their series with the Bucs on Sunday with Game Three slated for 1:00 p.m.
