MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of West Georgia Baseball team dropped the final game of their three-game series against Christian Brothers on Sunday, falling 12-11 in extra innings.
While the offense was firing on all cylinders, West Georgia's (5-5, 2-1 GSC) pitching and defense struggled in Game Three as the Wolves allowed 11 hits while committing two errors leading Christian Brothers (4-6, 1-2 GSC) to their extra inning win.
Garrett Moody got the start for head coach
Jeff Smith and the Wolves in Game Three, making the third start of his young career.
Sam Ladner got things started for UWG, beginning the game with a lead-off home run to quickly put West Georgia ahead. Christian Brothers answered in their half of the first as their two-hole hitter Dylan Pzyer homered to knot us up at one.
In the second, CBU's starter A.J. Gamboa got the first two outs without any issues before the Wolves worked some two-out magic.
Mason Cooper drew a two-out walk before
Cade Hohl brought him home with an RBI-triple.
Moments later, Ladner and
Cooper Prince drew back-to-back walks, loading up the bases before
Luke Hatcher drew a bases loaded walk to give West Georgia a 3-1 lead.
After getting through the first two inning while surrendering one run, things got rocky for Moody in the third as the freshman gave up four runs in the inning, propelling the Bucs to a 5-3 lead.
Lane Pearson got the call to the bullpen, relieving Moody in the third where he retired the side before leaving the game with an injury.
Pearson set the stage for the UWG offense that got a run back in the top of the fourth. The inning began with Hohl reaching courtesy of an error. He later stole second, bringing up Ladner for an RBI opportunity and the pre-season All-GSC selection delivered. Ladner singled to shallow left, scoring Hohl to make it a 5-4 game.
Carson Crossley took over for the injured Pearson and got through the fourth inning unscathed before West Georgia retook the lead in the top of the fifth. It was more two-out magic for the Wolves in the fifth as
Jack Witmer doubled down the left field line, bringing up
Carson Mynatt who blasted a two-run homer to left field to put UWG back out in front, 6-5.
CBU tied the game in their half of the fifth courtesy of an RBI-single from Gabe Walker until an RBI-double from Prince gave UWG the lead right back in the sixth.
Up 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Christian Brothers struck for four runs off of newly inserted
Ryan Whitener, taking a 10-7 lead into the seventh.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the seventh as an RBI-double from Hohl cut the Wolves deficit to two before a sacrifice-fly from Prince made it a one-run game. Next to bat was Hatcher who was hit by pitch, bringing up
Jared Emory who drew a bases loaded walk. After Emory tied the game, Rich stepped up to the plate and drew a bases loaded walk of his own to give West Georgia an 11-10 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bucs pushed a run across to tie the game once again. Neither team could score in the ninth, taking us into extra innings with the score knotted at 11.
UWG couldn't push a run across in their half of the 10
th and in the bottom half CBU's Will Gossett walked it off for the Bucs with an RBI-single.
Hohl finished with three hits and two RBIs while Ladner, Prince, and Mynatt also picked up two RBIs.
West Georgia will be back in action on Tuesday when they return home to Cole Field for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference matchup against Georgia Southwestern.
