Tennis Falls to No. 18 AUM in GSC Opener

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG tennis team gave the nation's 18th-ranked team a test on Wednesday in the Gulf South Conference opener, but ultimately it was a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks.

West Georgia (2-4, 0-1 GSC) pushed two of the doubles matches to tiebreakers, and got two points from singles on Wednesday in front of a large crowd at Sunset Hills Country Club.

Auburn Montgomery (3-2, 1-1 GSC) won the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. First and seconds doubles each went to a tiebreaker, with Sophie Mnich and Andrea Medel falling 7-6 in line one and Lea von Kozierowski and Futaba Saito falling in the second line. Karla Menendez and Luna Mouton fell 6-0 in third doubles.

The Warhawks took second singles 6-1, 6-0 and third singles 6-0, 6-1 scores to take a commanding 3-0 lead, and leaving no room for error from the Wolves down the stretch. The Warhawks then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win in fourth singles.

West Georgia's first point came from line one singles as Lea von Kozierowski defeated Estefania Garcia. Kozierowski won the first set, lost the second and then won in a 10-point tiebreak. Karla Melendez had the same result in fifth singles, winning the opening set 6-3, before falling 7-5 and then winning a 10-point tiebreaker to earn a second point for the home team.

Sixth singles also went to AUM in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

The Wolves are back into non-conference play on Friday, traveling to Georgia College.
