CARROLLTON, Ga. – The final two home games of the 2023-24 season await the UWG women's basketball team, and the first of those is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. as the Wolves host Shorter in Gulf South Conference action.
LAST TIME OUT
It was a 71-53 defeat for the Wolves on Wednesday in Cleveland, Tennessee against the Lee Flames. UWG (14-11, 10-11 GSC) struggled protecting the basketball, turning it over 23 times in the loss.
Zuriyah Davis led the Wolves with 19 points while
Mykah Anderson had a career-high 16 points in the loss.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Shorter (2-23, 1-20) is having a rough go in 2023-24, their final year in the Gulf South Conference. The Hawks' lone GSC win came on the road at West Alabama on February 3, and since then the Hawks dropped four straight home contests.
Derrica McCall leads the Hawks in scoring at 11.8 per game, followed by 11.2 per game from Tiara Lewis. Lewis is Shorter's leading rebounder at 6.2 per contest.
As a team, Shorter averages 53.5 points per game, while allowing 72.3 per game. In UWG's trip to Rome, the Wolves dropped 90 on the Hawks.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
As she has 13 times this season,
Zuriyah Davis led UWG in scoring on the night against Lee, and she is second in the conference in that category at 17.2 points per game.
K'Nari Holliday enters this weekend's game ranked second in the country in field goal percentage at 63.4 percent. The sophomore from Apopka, Florida is averaging 11.5 points per game.
UWG has two of the top five rebounders in the GSC as
Jada Powell is second in the league at 8.0 per game and Holliday is fifth at 6.7 per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
UWG leads the all-time series 25-13, winning each of the last three straight including January's 90-62 win in Rome. West Georgia is 14-5 all-time against Shorter at home. The last Shorter win in Carrollton came in 2018.
SENIOR DAY
West Georgia will honor a pair of seniors on Saturday,
Jada Powell and
Sophia Singer, as they play the first of their final two home games. Senior Day ceremonies are set for pregame.
