Softball Drops Series Opener to Shorter at Home

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to the Shorter Hawks on Friday night to open this weekend's three-game Gulf South Conference series.

The Wolves (6-8, 1-3 GSC) never led in the game, after giving up a two-run home run in the first inning, but made a comeback after falling behind 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Shorter (2-9, 1-3 GSC) had 10 hits in the win and played error free defense while UWG committed one error.

After the two-run home, the Wolves cashed in a leadoff double from R.J. Janke in the second inning, moving her to third on a sac bunt and getting the run across on a wild pitch.

UWG's starting pitcher Blaire Bizette then put up two zeroes, as did Rylee Gattis who started for the Hawks. But in the fifth, Shorter would use a two-out walk, followed by a single, a fielders choice, and back-to-back singles to score thee and stretch their lead to 5-1.

West Georgia would respond with three in the bottom half with Megan Waites and Tamia Young registering hits before a three-run homer from Blaire Bizette made it a 5-4 game. Shorter would then add a run in the sixth, while UWG would manage just one single over their final two at-bats.

Of UWG's seven hits, six of them came from the top four in the order with a pair of freshmen in Waites and Young each notching two-hit games.

Bizette pitched a complete game for the Wolves, allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out three.

The Wolves and Hawks meet tomorrow for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 2 p.m. from University Softball Field.
