Softball Sweeps Shorter to take GSC Series

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader over Shorter to win the weekend's Gulf South Conference series in Carrollton.

West Georgia (8-8, 3-3 GSC) won game one in run-rule fashion, 11-3, before pulling out a 5-4 victory in game two to take the series over Shorter (2-11, 1-5 GSC).

GAME ONE: West Georgia 11, Shorter 3
In a game that featured four home runs, the Hawks had three of them which accounted for all of the Shorter offense. West Georgia struck first, as Blaire Bizette got an RBI-groundout to push Megan Waites who reached on an error. A leadoff home run for Shorter in the second tied things up, and another solo shot in the third gave Shorter their first lead of the game.

Blaire Bizette hit her fourth home run of the season, and second of the series in the bottom of the third, tying things up at 2-2, before another Shorter solo shot made it 3-2.

Makayla Register led off the fourth with a double and then a Jacelyn Lahr single moved her to third with a single, and the game went 3-3 on a sac fly from Rylee Green. Singles from Calli Hardison and Megan Waites then pushed two more across to make it a 5-3 lead.

West Georgia then broke things open and eventually walked it off with six runs in the fifth. It started with a walk, then a hit by pitch and an error to load the bases. Lahr then picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice, and then another hit by pitch loaded the bases. A wild pitch and an error then made the score 8-3. Another sacrifice fly made it 9-3and a Waites double made it 10-3 before a Caprice Leonard pinch hit double pushed the game-winning run across.

Megan Waites and Makayla Register each had two hits in the win with Waites and Bizette leading the way with two RBIs a piece.

Calli Hardison started, pitching four innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on four hits.

GAME TWO: West Georgia 5, Shorter 4
Just like in game one, West Georgia got the first run, with R.J. Janke doubling home Megan Waites to start the scoring.

A solo shot from Shorter tied it up, and the Wolves then made it 2-1 on an unearned run in the second. In the third, Shorter kept the long ball train going as a two-run home run gave them a 3-2 lead and a wild pitch made it 4-2.

In the third, Zekylah Boyd singled home Bizette to cut the deficit to one, and the Wolves took the lead for good in the fourth.

Shorter would commit four errors in the game, and two in the fourth would prove costly. Waites reached on an error to lead off the inning, then scoring on an RBI triple from Addison Sturdivant. With two outs, another error would allow Sturdivant to score the eventual game winning run.

UWG used three pitchers in the win, with Makayla Register starting before making way for Destry Lambert in the third. It was Marissa Thompson who got the win, putting in excellent work in relief. Thompson finished with 4.1 innings pitched, surrendering just two hits while striking out five and walking one.

Addison Sturdivant and Rylee Green led the way offensively with two hits each with Sturdivant, Janke, and Boyd each recording RBIs.
