Wolves Suffer First Loss of Season in Milledgeville

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday after a 14-5 road loss to the Georgia College & State Bobcats.

It was a tightly contested battle for the first seven inning between West Georgia (3-1, 0-0 GSC) and Georgia College & State (4-0 0-0 PBC) before the Bobcats erupted for eight runs in the eighth inning to pull away from the Wolves.

After picking up a save during opening weekend, freshman Garrett Moody made his first career start, pitching 1 1/3 inning and surrendering three earned runs.

After both team's starters breezed through the first inning, West Georgia threatened in their half of the second but couldn't plate a run, leaving runners stranded on first and third.

Courtesy of a handful of walks and hits allowed, Georgia College & State struck first as they scored three runs in their half of the second inning, putting the Wolves in a three-run deficit as the game progressed to the third inning.

After Hickman retired the Bobcats in order in the top of the fourth, Michael Rich put the Wolves in business with a lead-off double in the bottom half before Georgia College & State worked out of the jam, keeping West Georgia scoreless.

UWG got themselves on the board in the top of the fifth. The inning got started with a Mason Cooper infield single. Four batter later, the Wolves loaded up the bases with Mike Rich coming up to bat. Rich worked the count and drew a bases loaded walk before Walt McConnell was hit by a pitch, cutting West Georgia's deficit to one.

Georgia College & State quickly responded in their half of the fifth as they finally got to Hickman. An RBI-double down the right field line from Cam McNearney plated the Bobcats run which extended their lead to two.

Back-to-back hits from Cade Hohl and Mason Cooper and a wild pitch put UWG in prime position to tie the ball game in the 6th. The Wolves would do just that and more as Jack Witmer and Sam Ladner both delivered RBI-singles before a Rich ground out scored Witmer, giving West Georgia their first lead of the ball game at 5-4.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Bobcats retook the league in the blink of an eye courtesy of a two-run homer from Mason Poole off of UWG's Hunter Gulledge.

From there on out, Georgia College & State added eight more runs in the last three innings to defeat the West Georgia 14-5.

UWG will make their long-awaited return to Cole Field on Friday at 3:00 PM when they open up a three-game home series against Young Harris.
