CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team dropped the first two games of their three-game series to the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Friday.
West Georgia (3-3) got out hit by Young Harris (5-0) in game one, leading to their 10-6 loss before three costly errors in game two put the Wolves down 2-0 in the series.
GAME ONE: Young Harris 10, UWG 6
After getting through the first inning unscathed, starter Brendan Parks ran into a bit of trouble in the second as Young Harris struck first in the ball game courtesy of a solo home run from Steve Spell.
In the bottom half of the second, Luke Hatcher got things started for UWG with a lead-off double before Michael Rich drew a walk. A sac bunt from Patrick McCullough moved the runners to second and third before a passed ball scored Hatcher, tying the game at one.
After giving up that solo home run in the second inning, Parks bounced back by only allowing one hit and striking out six in the next three innings.Â
Dealing through four innings, West Georgia's offense put Parks in position to get the win as Luke Hatcher homered in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
An injury would take Parks out of the game in the top of the fifth, forcing coach Smith to bring in Jonathan Hickman. Young Harris would go on to score three runs in the inning to give the Mountain Lions a 4-2 lead as the game progressed to the bottom of the fifth.
West Georgia got a run back in the bottom half courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Cade Hohl that scored Jared Emory. After the Wolves pushed their runs across in the fifth, Hickman settled down and sat the Mountain Lions down with no issues.
West Georgia took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning after an RBI-single from Cooper Prince and back-to-back wild pitches that scored Hohl and Prince, propelling UWG to a 6-4 lead.
The Wolves took their lead into the ninth inning. Hickman remained in the game and surrendered two runs in the inning, tying the game at six.Â
In extra innings, Young Harris scored four runs in the 12th and West Georgia couldn't match as the Mountain Lions went on to take game one, 10-6.
GAME TWO: Young Harris 6, UWG 4
Young Harris struck early in game two, scoring three runs in the second inning on starter Seth Dudley.Â
The Wolves responded in the third inning, beginning with Jared Emory who led off the inning with a solo home run. Moments later, three straight singles from Mason Cooper, Hohl, and Prince loaded up the bases for West Georgia before Hatcher brought Cooper and Hohl home with a two-run single, tying the game at three. Rich followed that up with an RBI-single, putting the Wolves up 4-3.
Dudley shut down the Mountain Lions lineup for the next couple of innings until he ran into some trouble in sixth. Young Harris' Steve Spell got things started for the Mountain Lions with a lead-off double, forcing coach Smith to go to his bullpen, bringing in Carson Crossley. An RBI-single from Jack Enrico tied the game at four as we went to the final frame.
In the seventh inning, Young Harris scored two runs off of Crossley, giving them a two-run lead as the game progressed to the bottom half.
Cooper Prince was able to get on with a single to right field but that's all the Wolves would do as the Mountain Lions took game two, 6-4.
West Georgia will conclude their series against Young Harris on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
