Wolves Drop Home Midweek Contest to No. 23 North Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia baseball team fell to .500 on the season on Wednesday after a 6-2 loss to the 23rd ranked team in the country, the North Georgia Nighthawks.

UWG (11-11, 7-5 GSC) walked seven batters and gave up nine hits, leading North Georgia (16-4, 5-1 GSC) to their four run win.

Ryan Whitener got the start for West Georgia and quickly found himself in trouble after an error from Cade Hohl and a walk drawn by Noah Darden put runners on first and second to begin. Two batters later, Phillip Ard came up to the plate and delivered a three-run homer, giving the Nighthawks a 3-0 lead.

Jack Rasmussen got the ball for the next two innings and only gave up one hit, while striking out two to keep the score at 3-0.

The Nighthawks' pitching staff continued to stifle the Wolves' offense while Brady Simpson got the call to the bullpen in the fifth where North Georgia added a run to their lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, UWG got on the board courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Luke Hatcher that scored Cooper Prince.

Down 4-1 in the sixth, West Georgia got within two runs as a sacrifice fly from Mason Cooper scored Sam Ladner, cutting the Wolves' deficit to two.

With UWG crawling their way back into the ball game, head coach Jeff Smith went to his best arm out of the bullpen, Jonathan Hickman. North Georgia's Ard began the inning with a lead-off double before a double from Luke Starling scored Ard to put the Nighthawks back up by three. Two batters later, Brady Skipper hit an RBI-double of his own, extending North Georgia's lead back up to four.

In the bottom of the seventh, West Georgia loaded up the bases with one out but failed to score, keeping the deficit at 6-2 as the game progressed to the top of the eighth.

From there on out, the Wolves couldn't push any runs across as they fell, 6-2.

Jack Witmer recorded two hits on the night while Rasmussen and Carson Crossley put together solid outings on the mound.

West Georgia will be back in action this weekend when they welcome Florida Southern for a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
