Baseball Sweeps Saturday Double Header Against Mocs

CARROLLTON, Ga- The University of West Georgia Baseball team swept their Saturday double header against Florida Southern, winning Game One, 5-4, and Game Two, 10-3.

"It was good for us to get back and play", said Head Baseball Coach Jeff Smith. "Florida Southern is an excellent team. We didn't play as well as we expected at Montevallo, especially the last game as we did not pitch well, and today we came out and threw the baseball extremely well."

Game One: UWG 5, Florida Southern 4

Jack Rasmussen was the starting pitcher for the Wolves in Game One. He would go on to have a productive day, pitching four innings allowing just one run off three hits, and surrendering one walk. Brendan Parks relieved Rasmussen after the fourth and gave the Wolves a couple of big innings out of the pen, going 2 and 2/3 innings while allowing one run, none earned.

The Mocs got the scoring going first in the top of the third before West Georgia tied the score at one with a solo homer to dead center courtesy of DH Jared Emory. Florida Southern retook the lead in the fourth, putting UWG in a 2-1 hole as we went to the fifth.

The game progressed to the sixth where Walt McConnell tied us up at two with an RBI single. Jack Witmer would follow with a RBI single of his own in the next at-bat to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead. West Georgia would score again in the bottom of the seventh via an RBI single from Sam Ladner before Cade Hohl drove in McConnell in the eighth, putting UWG up 5-2 as we went to the final frame.

There were struggles for the Wolves in the top of the ninth as they gave up two runs, but Ryan Whitener came in the clutch as he got the save with two runners left on base for the Mocs to secure a 5-4 win.

Game Two: UWG 10, Florida Southern 3

For Game Two, Seth Dudley got the start for the Wolves, he finished the ball game, pitching two innings and allowing three earned runs. Garrett Moody entered after Dudley and went three scoreless innings, picking up his second career win. Hickman was next in line pitching in the eighth and ninth inning and going scoreless as well.

The West Georgia bats were hot to begin Game Two as the Wolves scored six runs in the first inning. Emory got things started as the junior delivered an RBI-single, scoring Ladner before McConnell, Mason Cooper, and Tyler Presnell followed suit with RBI-singles of their own to put UWG up 6-0.

The Mocs cut the lead in half in the top of the second as they scored three runs in the inning to make the score 6-3. Emory hit a sac-fly in the bottom of the fourth to increase the Wolves lead to four. Jack Witmer would follow with an RBI-single, extending West Georgia's lead 8-3 going to the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, UWG scored off a hit by pitch, which was their fifth of the game, to increase their lead to six. Later in the inning, Witmer drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 10-3.

Coach Smith called on Hickman out of the bullpen and the senior went on to finish the game as West Georgia won Game Two, 10-3, clinching the series.

Game Three will be on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Cole Field.
