UWG Softball Splits Thursday Twin Bill Against Lander

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team split a Thursday doubleheader against Lander, winning game one before falling in the nightcap.

West Georgia (11-15) run-ruled the Bearcats in game one before Lander (19-6) returned the favor in game two.

GAME ONE: West Georgia 11, Lander 2
Zekylah Boyd got on with a one out walk and then stole second and scored on a single by Makayla Register. Blaire Bizette also earned a first inning walked then scored on an RBI groundout from Rylee Green.

The Bearcats responded with a two-spot in the second, and West Georgia got them right back in their half as Megan Waites doubled and Sturdivant came around to score from first and then Boyd drove in Waites to make it 4-2.

In the third, West Georgia scored four runs on four hits and a pair of Lander errors. The first error allowed Makayla Register to reach third, and then she scored on another error on a dropped third strike that allowed Green to reach. Jacelyn Lahr then singled home a run and Waites singled home two to stretch the advantage to six.

The first two batters reached in the fourth for Lander, but Blaire Bizette got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and a flout to keep the lead at 8-2 at the midway point.

UWG went up 9-2 in the fourth on a wild pitch, and the Lahr singled home two runs to make it 11-2, and Bizette stranded three runners on base in the bottom half to end the game in the fifth.

Lahr was 3-for-3 with three RBIs while Waites and Boyd each had two hits with Waites also driving in three runs.

Bizette pitched a complete game, allowing just two unearned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three.

GAME TWO: Lander 16, West Georgia 4
West Georgia's offense was cooled down in game two, being held to five hits and four runs while the Bearcats' offense came to life with 14 hits turning into 16 runs.

Lander scored one run in the second before a six spot in the second. West Georgia got their first run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Madison Vandergriff.

After the Bearcats got another in the third, UWG got the deficit to five as Bizette doubled home Tamia Young and then later scored on a wild pitch.

The Bearcats then doubled their run total with an eight spot in the sixth, and UWG got a run back in the bottom half.

UP NEXT
West Georgia heads to Florida next week for two doubleheaders in non-conference play. UWG starts the week with a Tuesday doubleheader against Emory-Riddle in Daytona.
