DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The UWG softball team began their Spring Break swing through the state of Florida on a sour note on Tuesday, dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Embry-Riddle.
West Georgia (11-17) trailed big in game one before coming back and falling short 8-6, but it was all Embry-Riddle (19-11) in game two as the Eagles took the nightcap, 10-0.
GAME ONE: Embry-Riddle 8, West Georgia 6
In a game that looked like it would be a pitcher's duel through four and a half innings, the contest ended with a combined 14 runs, 13 hits, and 10 errors.
After Emory-Riddle scored two in the first, UWG starter Marissa Thompson put up three straight zeroes while UWG's offense got an RBI single from Emily Bodenheimer in the fourth to make it a one run deficit at 2-0.
Four hits, two walks, and two errors allowed the Eagles to strike for six runs in the bottom of the fifth and take an 8-1 lead, but UWG wasn't going down without a fight as they struck back with four runs in the sixth.
The Wolves scored all four runs in the sixth with two outs, and took advantage of a costly error by the ERAU defense. A fielding error following another Bodenheimer single allowed Blaire Bizette to score after she reached on a leadoff walk, and then Calli Hardison cleared the bases with a pinch hit double to make it 8-5.
Makayla Register picked up an RBI in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to two before the Wolves stranded a runner at third to end the game.
Bodenheimer and Rylee Green each had two hits to account for four of UWG's six hits while Hardison drove in half of UWG's runs with the pinch hit double.
GAME TWO: Embry-Riddle 10, West Georgia 0
West Georgia's offense had just three hits in game two with two of those being singles. R.J. Janke had the lone extra-base hit, ripping a double in the fifth inning.
ERAU took a 1-0 lead in the first, then used four hits and a walk to score four runs in the third before adding five in the fourth on another four hits and a pair of walks.
Kaprice Leonard, who pitched in relief in game one, started for UWG and took the loss while Calli Hardison and Destry Lambert both pitched in relief.
