LIVINGSTON, Ala. - It was a tough Saturday at the ballpark for the UWG softball team as the Wolves fell in both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at West Alabama.
It was a pair of run-rule defeats for West Georgia (11-21, 4-10 GSC) as West Alabama (19-11, 8-9 GSC) outscored the Wolves 31-9 in the doubleheader, handing the Wolves their sixth and seventh consecutive losses.
GAME ONE: West Alabama 15, West Georgia 1
The Tigers used a tie-run first inning and four home runs to cruise to a run-rule victory in the series opener. In the first inning, UWG walked four of the first five batters, and gave up two home runs as UWA jumped up 9-0.
Madison Vandergriff gave the Wolves a run back with a solo home run in the second, UWG's only hit of the game, and UWA added a run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth before getting the Wolves in order in the fifth to end the game.
Of UWG's 15 outs in the game, UWA's ace, Madison Wright, struck out nine. As a team, West Alabama had 10 hits in the win with half of them going for extra bases including the four home runs.
GAME TWO: West Alabama 16, West Georgia 8
West Georgia's offense woke up in game two, and had a lead at two points in the game. The Wolves led 1-0 after the opening half inning as Rylee Green picked up an RBI-single. But the Tigers came right back and hit a two-run homer to take the lead back.
After West Alabama added two in the second to go up 4-1, the Wolves got a second run on a RBI-double by Vandergriff to make it 4-2, but West Alabama responded with a two-RBI double in the bottom half to go back up 6-2.
UWG then scored five runs in the fourth to regain a lead, using three hits and an error in the frame. A leadoff walk and a single set up a good situation and an error by UWA allowed a run to score, and then a Blaire Bizette single made it 6-4. R.J. Janke then singled home two runs to tie it up at 6-6, and an RBI-groundout from Vandergriff gave UWG a 7-6 lead.
It was short lived, however, as UWA scored four runs on five walks, a hit, and an error in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
UWA added four more in their half of the fifth, and a Blaire Bizette home run in the sixth cut the deficit to six to force a bottom half, and UWA got a two-RBI single to go up eight and complete the run-rule.
The Wolves three through six hitters: Bizette, Green, Janke, and Vandergriff each had two hits in the loss with Bizette and Vandergriff each driving in two RBIs.
