CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team fell, 4-2, in Game One of their three-game series against Delta State.
UWG (16-15, 9-7 GSC) struggled offensively against one of the best pitchers in the country in Delta State's (19-14, 10-6 GSC) Logan Eldridge as the Wolves only mustered up six hits in the ball game.Â
The reigning GSC and South Region Pitcher of the Week, Seth Dudley got the start for West Georgia and got through the first two innings before he surrendered his first run of the game in the third.
Dudley retired the first two batters in the inning, before walking Brendan McCauley which began a two-out rally for Delta State. Brett Burrell was next up and singled before a wild pitch scored McCauley, putting the Statesmen up 1-0.
In the fourth, Dudley bounced back by striking out the side in order, but the Wolves still couldn't put any runs on the board as we went to the fifth with the Statesmen leading 1-0.
The West Georgia right hander breezed through the fifth and sixth inning before running into trouble in the seventh. The Statesmen's Hayden Cooper hit a no-doubt two-run home run to left field, putting UWG in a 3-0 deficit in the seventh.
Ryan Whitener was inserted to finish the seventh inning and pitched the eighth where Delta State added a run after an error from Sam Ladner.
Down 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Jackson Webb and Cade Hohl hit solo home runs, cutting Delta State's lead to 4-2 as we went to the ninth inning.
After 8.0 innings of work, the Statesmen's ace, Eldridge's day was done as Delta State brought in their closer, Josh Hill for an opportunity for his third save of the season.
Hill struck out the side in order as the Wolves fell, 4-2, in Game One.
Emory and Hohl both finished with two hits while Dudley pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
West Georgia will conclude their series against Delta State on Saturday with a double header, beginning at 12:00 p.m.Â
