West Georgia Completes Series Sweep over Delta State

Softball Scores 32 Runs to Sweep Series

CARROLLTON, Ga. - A pair of wins on Good Friday sealed a series sweep for UWG softball as the Wolves blasted Delta State in a doubleheader, winning all three games of a three-game Gulf South Conference series.

Both wins were by a combined 17 runs as West Georgia (14-22, 7-11 GSC) won 8-1 in the first game of Friday and then won the finale 11-1 in a run-rule, combining for 32 runs in the three-game set.

The Wolves got two excellent pitching performances as Marissa Thompson and Destry Lambert both pitched compete games and limited the Delta State (7-30, 3-15) to just two runs on the day.

Offensively, Megan Waites went 5-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: West Georgia 8, Delta State 1
West Georgia struck first on a R.J. Janke's fifth home run of the season, as the senior blasted a three-run shot over the scoreboard to make it 3-0. Megan Waites then singled home Zekylah Boyd to make it 4-0.

In the fourth, Waites picked up two more RBIs on a double to left, and Blaire Bizette's fourth inning home run stretched the lead to 8-0. It was the ninth home run of the season for the junior from New Roads, Louisiana.

Delta State got a leadoff triple in the fifth and later pushed the run across to avoid a run-rule, but Thompson kept the Delta State offense from any more damage, ending the game with all seven innings pitched, one run on five hits, no walks and a trio of strikeouts.

The Wolves had eight hits in the win, including a 3-for-3 game from Waites with three RBIs, while Blaire Bizette went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

GAME TWO: West Georgia 11, Delta State 1
The Wolves needed just six hits to score 11 runs in the series finale, and they got a huge lead early over DSU. After a perfect first from Lambert, the Wolves used four hits to score eight runs in the opening inning.

Zekylah Boyd quickly cashed in a leadoff walk, by scoring from first on a sac bunt thanks to an error and an obstruction call at the plate. Blaire Bizette then singled home Waites, and Makayla Register kept it going with a single to score Bizette. The Wolves then loaded the bases and Janke picked up the easy RBI by drawing a walk. A throwing error then allowed two runs to score and Zekylah Boyd's RBI groundout pushed across the seventh and another Waites double scored the eighth.

Register's third home run of the season came ion the game's second inning and made it a 9-0 lead for the Wolves.

Lambert carried a no-hitter into the fourth when Delta State got back-to-back two-out doubles to push their only run across, but UWG responded with two runs in the bottom half. It was Sabrina Celeste who drove in the two fourth0inning runs, singling home Register and Jadyn Tummins.

In the fifth, Lambert pitched around a walk and a single to earn a fine-inning complete game and her first career win. She gave up just three hits and the one run while picking up two strikeouts.

A pair of freshmen, Register and Waites, each had two hits, accounting for four of the Wolves' six hits while Bizette and Celeste picked up the other two.
