CARROLLTON, Ga. - There was plenty of drama in the late hours of Wednesday at University Field as the UWG softball team split a doubleheader against Young Harris in non-conference action.
In game one, Young Harris (12-8) pounded out three home runs to cruise to a 12-4 victory, and it looked like the YHC offense was up for a big night in game two before West Georgia (10-11) erased a 6-0 deficit and walked off a 7-6 win just after 9:30 p.m. in game two.
It was Emily Bodenheimer that provided the clutch, two-RBI single that sent the Wolves home as the victor in the final game of the doubleheader behind a solid performance in relief from Calli Hardison.
GAME ONE: Young Harris 12, West Georgia 4
West Georgia struck first in the second inning, cashing in a leadoff single by R.J. Janke and a Madison Vandergriff walk to lead 2-0. In the top of third, YHC opened with a two-run home run, then a solo shot in back-to-back at-bats and then later cleared the bases with a triple and an error and eventually led 6-2.
A leadoff double by Zekylah Boyd produced a third run for the Wolves as Janke singled home Boyd to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Young Harris got two runs in the fifth to make it an 8-3 lead before Janke singled home another run in the the bottom half. The Mountain Lions then got four, highlighted by a three-run home run in the sixth and then held off UWG to win it after six innings.
Janke had three of UWG's five hits on the day and drove in two of the runs.
Blaire Bizette took the loss in the circle, allowing seven earned runs in four innings pitched.
GAME TWO: West Georgia 7, Young Harris 6
Young Harris took a 6-0 lead through two innings of game two, scoring a pair runs in the first and four in the second.Â
In the second, a throwing error from YHC followed by a Rylee Green double and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Emily Bodenheimer plated the Wolves' first run. The Wolves then manufactured a run with a leadoff walk, a sac bunt, and single by Green to make it 6-2 through four.
Calli Hardison got an RBI the hard way in the fifth, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Green then had another big hit, singling home two to to make it a 6-5 deficit.
Trailing 6-5 in the seventh, UWG got a leadoff single from Makayla Register, followed by a Hardison single. After a fly ball moved a runner to third, Hardison stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Emily Bodenheimer then delivered a single to push two runs across to win the game for the Wolves.
Green led the Wolves offensively with three hits and three RBIs while Bodeheimer had two hits and three RBIs. Register and Bizette also had multi-hit games with two each.
Hardison came on relief of Kaprice Leonard and pitched masterfully, allowing just two hits and a walk over 5.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts.
