Tennis Falls to No. 18 West Florida in Friday Morning Meeting

CARROLLTON, Ga. - It was an early start to Friday for the UWG women's tennis team as the Wolves fell 5-2 to 18th-ranked West Florida in home Gulf South Conference tennis action at Sunset Hills Country Club.

It was the first time that West Georgia (3-5, 0-3 GSC) scored a point against West Florida (5-2, 3-0 GSC) since collegiate tennis went to the current seven-point scoring format prior to the 2019 season.

West Florida took the doubles point, clinching it with wins in third doubles then second doubles, but Sophie Mnich and Andrea Medel won their match in first line doubles by a 6-4 count.

UWG got their two points in singles, as Andrea Medel won her match in fourth singles. Medel won the first set 7-6 before dropping the second 6-2 and winning 10-4 in a tie-breaker. Rebeca Lopez also earned a point in fifth singles, winning sets two and three after falling in the first.

First and sixth singles went three sets with Lea von Kozierowski losing in a tightly contested number one singles match and Kendall Haden falling in three in line six. Second and third singles, occupied by Sophie Mnich and Karla Menendez, were won in straight sets by the opposition.

West Georgia is back in action on the road next Thursday against Montevallo.
