Softball Swept on Day One at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - It was a tough day on the diamond for the UWG softball team as the Wolves fell in both ends of their Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Montevallo on the road.

West Georgia (10-13, 4-7 GSC) lost 8-3 in the series opener, and led by three in extra innings before Montevallo (14-8, 7-1 GSC) used a walkoff grand slam in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep and clinch the series ahead of tomorrow's game three.

GAME ONE: Montevallo 8, West Georgia 3
West Georgia struggled in the circle and defensively in the opener, walking 12 batters and committing three errors in a five-run loss.

Back-to-back home runs in the first staked Montevallo to an early 2-0 lead and the Falcons eventually stretched that lead to 4-0 after two innings. West Georgia got on the board in the third on Blaire Bizette's sixth home run of the season, as she made it 4-2, scoring Isabella Pinto after she led off with a single.

Emily Bodenheimer, who had the walkoff in the Wednesday finale, made it a one-run game in the fourth with an RBI double to score Tamia Young from first.

In the fifth, Montevallo used two hits, three walks, and an error to add three, and then added another in the sixth to account for the 8-3 final.

The Wolves had six hits in the game with Bizette's home run and Bodenheimer's double counting for the only extra-base hits.

Makayla Register started the game and pitched just one inning and took the loss.

GAME TWO:
Bizette stayed hot in game two, homering in her first at-bat to take a 1-0 lead for UWG, but Montevallo quickly made it 2-1 in their half of the inning.

A Jacelyn Lahr solo home run in the second inning tied things up at 2-2 before a triple and a single from Montevallo gave the Falcons the lead back in the bottom half of the third.

West Georgia would trail 3-2 until an error in the with allowed the Wolves to tie the game at 3-3, and the Wolves took the lead on an RBI single from Lahr in the seventh.

Montevallo would score a run in the seventh to tie it up once again and force extra innings, and it looked like it would go UWG's way as Makayla Register slugged a three-run home run in the eighth and put the Wolves up 7-4.

In the eighth, however, a single, walk, and error loaded the bases for the Falcons, who got a walkoff grand slam from the GSC's second-leading home run hitter, Sydnee Reaves, winning the game 8-7.

The Wolves had 14 hits in the game and Pinto led UWG in game two with three hits, while Bizette, Register, and Lahr each had two hits with Register's three RBIs leading the way. Calli Hardison pitched the entire game for UWG, tossing 138 pitches.
