Softball Falls in Game One, Nightcap Rained Out

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The UWG softball team got through a game and a half before the rain moved in on Wednesday in Columbus. The Wolves fell in game one, 6-5, before game two was rained out before the game became official.

West Georgia (16-26) got a three-hitter from starter Calli Hardison, but four costly errors were their demise in the first game as Columbus State (26-18) pushed across six runs on just three hits.

After a leadoff double from Megan Waites, a sac bunt, and an RBI-single from Blaire Bizette, the Wolves led 1-0, only for a pair of UWG errors in the bottom half to account for three Cougar runs and Columbus State's first lead of the afternoon.

West Georgia would go back up in front with three runs of their own in the third, getting back-to-back singles from Makayla Register and R.J. Janke before Jacelyn Lahr doubled to score Register. A CSU error then allowed Janke and Lahr to score to give the Wolves and their starter Hardison a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth, Blaire Bizette made it 5-3 with her team-leading 10th home run of the season. The New Roads, Louisiana native became the first UWG player to slug double-digit home runs in a season since Nicole Yancey in 2014.

A fifth-inning, two-out home run from Columbus State's Lindsey Patton would then tie things up at 5-5 before an error on a dropped third strike allowed the game winning run aboard in the sixth. That runner would then steal second and come in to score on another UWG error.

Hardison pitched arguably her best game of her career, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five. Only two of the six runs allowed were earned, with those coming off of the home run.

Offensively, Blaire Bizette led the way with three hits including the home run. Freshman Makayla Register and senior Isabella Pinto also had two hits as UWG finished with 10 in the game.

Game two was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain with CSU up 13-4. The game will go down as a no contest, and none of the stats will count.

West Georgia is on the road this weekend, traveling to Auburn Montgomery for a three-game weekend series. The series begins Friday evening in Montgomery, Alabama.
