MONTGOMERY, Ala - Off the strength of two home runs from
Jackson Webb, the University of West Georgia Baseball team took Game One of their series against Auburn Montgomery on Friday, 5-4.
Webb quite literally carried the load offensively as the senior recorded three of UWG's (19-19, 11-11 GSC) seven hits while driving in three of their five runs, leading them to their win over AUM (24-16, 15-7 GSC).
Seth Dudley got the start for West Georgia in and got some early run support from his offense.
The Wolves struck first in the ball game with a three-run second inning, beginning with an RBI-double from Webb.
Beau Brand immediately followed that up with an RBI-double of his own before
Cade Hohl extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI-single, giving West Georgia a 3-0 lead.
Webb got right back to work at the plate in the fourth inning as the catcher hit his fifth home run of the season to extend UWG's to four.
Auburn Montgomery got a run back and finally got on the board in their half of the fourth, but West Georgia still held a 4-1 as the game progressed to the fifth.
The Warhawks loaded up the bases on Dudley in the fifth inning, forcing head coach
Jeff Smith to make a move to his bullpen. Smith called on
Jonathan Hickman to get out of the jam. Hickman allowed two of Dudley's runs to score as AUM cut UWG's lead to 4-3.
After both pitchers neutralized their opposing offenses in the next couple of innings, Auburn Montgomery tied the game in the eighth courtesy of a solo home run from Kasey Clark.
Tied at four in the ninth, Webb delivered once again as the senior capped off a three-hit game with his second home run of the night to put the Wolves back up, 5-4.
Hickman trotted back out to the mound in the bottom half with a chance to secure his third win of the season and he did just that as the right handed sat the Warhawks down 1-2-3 to seal a, 5-4, win.
Besides Webb career day, Hickman threw 4.2 innings on the hill, surrendering one run on three hits.
West Georgia and AUM will finish their three-game series on Saturday with a 2:00 PM EST double-header.
