CLINTON, Miss. - Behind the bat of
Luke Hatcher, the University of West Georgia Baseball team swept their double header against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Friday.
Hatcher collected five hits on the day, including two home runs and four RBIs leading UWG (22-21, 13-13 GSC) to two crucial wins over Mississippi College (18-22, 9-17 GSC)
GAME ONE: UWG 8, MC 3
Will Dean got the start for West Georgia in Game One and was given the lead before throwing a pitch as a sacrifice fly from Hatcher got the Wolves on the board first.
Dean's outing got off to a rocky start as the junior's first five pitches resulted in a walk and a hit by pitch, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Dean settled down and recorded a big strikeout before
Cade Hohl and
Sam Ladner turned a 6-4-3 double play to get the right hander and UWG out of the inning unscathed.
West Georgia added to their lead in the second and fourth innings with
Patrick McCullough driving in
Jack Witmer, in the second, while
Sam Ladner recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth, also driving in Witmer, to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead.
Dean put together his third inning of shutout out ball in the fourth before Hatcher extended UWG's lead to four in the bottom half with his eighth home run of the season.
Up 4-0 in the fifth, Mississippi College got on the board courtesy of a solo home run from Bryce LaRocca. After the solo shot, Dean retired the next batter and saw his day come to an end as head coach
Jeff Smith called on
Jonathan Hickman out of the bullpen.
Hickman recorded the final two outs in the fifth and in the sixth, surrendered a run as the Choctaws cut the Wolves lead to 4-2.
In the seventh, Hickman retired the first two batters of the inning without any issues but struggled to secure the third. With two outs in the inning, Hickman hit a batter and later committed an error attempting a pick-off, moving the runner to second base before JT Vance delivered an RBI-single to cut West Georgia's lead to one.
With all of the momentum in the Choctaws' favor, Ladner swung the pendulum back the other way as the senior delivered a huge two-out RBI-single to extend UWG's lead back to two.
After another solid inning of work from Hickman, the Wolves added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth. A throwing error from Mississippi College's Luis Alcantara scored
Carson Mynatt and Prince, putting West Georgia up 7-3. Later in the inning,
Myles Cook executed a safety squeeze to perfection as he drove in
Jackson Webb to give UWG a five-run lead.
Hickman remained in the game to finish out the game and slammed the door to secure a 8-3 Game One win for West Georgia.
Hatcher recorded a game high three hits along with two RBIs while Lander and Webb also drove in two runs.
GAME TWO: UWG 11, MC 3
Seth Dudley got the start for UWG in Game Two and allowed two runs in the first inning, putting the Wolves in a 2-0 hole to begin.
West Georgia got those runs back and then some in the third as the Wolves exploded for a seven-run inning. Prince got things started with an RBI-single before Hatcher followed that up with an RBI-double. Witmer and Hohl were due up next and both delivered two-run doubles to put UWG up 6-2. West Georgia wasn't done in the inning as Brand drove in Hohl to cap off their massive inning.
The Choctaws got a run back in their half of the third, but the Wolves still led by four as the game progressed to the fourth.
UWG's bats got right back to work in the fourth as Hatcher began the inning by hitting his second homer of the day.
From there on out, Dudley neutralized Mississippi College's offense while West Georgia's offense added three more runs in the seventh to take Game Two, 11-3.
West Georgia and Mississippi College will conclude their series on Saturday with Game Three slated for 2:00 p.m. EST
