CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team split their Saturday double header against Valdosta State, dropping Game Two, 15-0, and winning Game Three, 4-3.
West Georgia (23-25, 14-16 GSC) officially punched their ticket to the GSC Championship, on Senior Day, during Game Three against Valdosta State (26-18, 18-12 GSC), with Alabama Huntsville's win over Union, eliminating the Bulldogs.
"Offensively and defensively, we've been playing very well in these last five games," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We can play with any team in the league and we've shown that throughout the season."
GAME TWO: VSU 15, UWG 0
Seth Dudley got the start for the Wolves in Game Two and got through the first inning with ease before running into trouble in the second. Valdosta State scored seven runs on six hits on Dudley in the second, putting West Georgia in a 7-0 hole.
Nick Swanson came in and threw a shutout third inning, but struggled in the fourth as Valdosta State added two runs to extend their lead to 9-0.
Jake Jordan pitched the fifth inning and allowed four runs as the Blazers took a 13-0 lead.
Valdosta State added on two more runs in the game, taking Game Two, 15-0.
GAME THREE: UWG 4, VSU 3
Jonathan Hickman made his first start of the season in Game Three and surrendered a run in the first inning as the Blazers took a one-run lead.
West Georgia took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third as Luke Hatcher began the inning with a solo home run before Jackson Webb gave the Wolves the lead with an RBI-single.Â
After three innings of work, Hickman's day came to an end as head coach Jeff Smith called on Brendan Parks to pitch the fourth. Valdosta State tied the game in the inning as DJ Banks hit an RBI-double.
In the next inning, VSU's Dennis Pierce gave the Blazers the lead once again with a solo home run, making the score 3-2 as the game progressed to the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, Parks walked Hunter Stowe who later advanced to second after a wild pitch, forcing coach Smith to go back to his bullpen. Smith called on Ronny Piepmeier who got UWG out of the jam unscathed.
The Wolves were down to their final three outs in the seventh. Jared Emory was due up first and led off the inning with a single before Witmer blooped in a single of his own. Webb came to the plate next and moved the runners over before the Blazers intentionally walked Ladner to load the bases with one out. Michael Rich then drew a bases loaded, game-tying walk, bringing up Cade Hohl who walked it off for UWG with a sacrifice fly.
Emory and Witmer both recorded two hits while Hatcher, Webb, Rich, and Hohl drove in the Wolves' four runs.
"The bottom line is that we have to get quality starts from our starting pitchers," coach Smith continued. "If they can pitch deep into the game, we don't have to dig into our bullpen as early and it gives our team a lot of confidence."
West Georgia now enters postseason play with a GSC first round matchup against Lee looming on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.
