CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team took Game One of their three-game series against Alabama Huntsville, 4-2, on Friday.
UWG's (18-17, 10-9 GSC)
Seth Dudley and
Jonathan Hickman shut down one of the best offenses in the GSC on Friday, holding Alabama Huntsville (16-19, 4-15 GSC) to two runs on six hits.
"I like how we showed up today and competed," said head coach
Jeff Smith. "We didn't get the start that we necessary wanted from Seth as he was a little inconsistent with some things but he got through seven innings to where we could get Jonny in there."
Dudley got the start for West Georgia in Game One and surrendered a run in the first inning.
UWG responded in their half of the inning as
Cooper Prince began the side with a lead off single. Prince was later brought home courtesy of an RBI-double from
Jared Emory before a sacrifice fly from
Michael Rich and an RBI-single from
Cade Hohl made it a three-run inning for the Wolves.
The Chargers got a run back in the top of the third inning after a solo home run from Brock Butler, making it 3-2 West Georgia.
After four more shutout innings from Dudley, the UWG offense provided him with more run support in the bottom of the seventh. Prince got things started with a two out walk before
Jack Witmer was hit by a pitch, bringing up
Luke Hatcher. Hatcher delivered an RBI-single, scoring Prince to extend the Wolves' lead to 4-2.
Hickman got the call from the bullpen to pitch the eighth and gave up a walk and a base hit, before working his way out of the jam to keep West Georgia's lead at two.
UWG couldn't get any insurance runs in their half of the eighth but Hickman wouldn't need any as he sat down Alabama Huntsville 1-2-3 in the ninth to secure a 4-2 win in Game One.
Prince and Hatcher led the way offensively with two hits while Dudley pitched seven innings, giving up five hits on two earned runs.
"We have to make sure we continue to get quality starts and have zone discipline at the plate," coach Smith continued. "We have to play the game the right way, be determined, and play with energy."
West Georgia will conclude their three-game series with the Chargers on Saturday with a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
