UWG Football Announces 2028 Matchup with Former Rival Troy

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia announced today a football matchup with Troy University set for 2028, which will be the institution's fourth season of Division I football.

The Wolves and Trojans will meet on September 9, 2028, in Troy, Alabama, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

"A very important byproduct of UWG's move to Division I is the fact that many of the institutions that formerly appeared on competition schedules here will do so again," said Director of Athletics Jason Carmichael. "The addition of Troy University to our football schedule in 2028 allows our fans to see their Wolves travel in the region to compete against a very competitive FBS program."

A member of the Sun Belt Conference, Troy has played Division I football since 1991 and has been in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) since 2001. Prior to their move to Division I, Troy was a member of the Gulf South Conference, where they played UWG eight times beginning in 1984. The 2028 matchup will be the first since 1991 and the sixth meeting in Troy. The Trojans lead the all-time series, 7-1.

Troy went 11-3 in their 2023 campaign, with two of their three losses coming to Power Five schools, including a 17-10 loss to Duke in the Birmingham Bowl.

This is UWG's first game announced on the 2028 schedule and is slated for week two of the season.
