FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of West Georgia women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the North Alabama Lions on Thursday night, opening Atlantic Sun Conference play with a road defeat.
West Georgia (1-6, 0-1 ASUN) had just five shots against North Alabama (3-4, 1-0 ASUN) in a physical match that featured a combined 30-plus fouls and five cautions.
UNA had the advantage in shots, 13-5 and put six of their attempts on target while put one of their five attempts on frame.
The Lions broke the scoreless tie in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a misplay in UWG's defensive half and getting a goal from Lexi Vernsey to go up 1-0.
That would be the majority of the offense as the teams combined for just four shots in the opening half, with UNA taking a 3-1 advantage in shots into the break. West Georgia got their first shot off late in the period and also had an opportunity with five minutes remaining, earning their first corner of the contest.
North Alabama's second goal came in the 59th minute as Anna Fugarino found the back of the net to double the Lions' lead. In the 78th minute, UNA earned a penalty kick and Giada Aldine converted from the spot to make it a 3-0 decision.
Angie Garces had two shots for UWG's offense while goalkeeper Siani Jones made three saves in goal.
The Wolves now return home for a Sunday matchup with Central Arkansas. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. from University Soccer Field.
