CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Central Arkansas after a late penalty kick goal in their first home Atlantic Sun Conference game on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves (1-7-0, 0-2-0 ASUN) struggled against the Bears (3-5-0, 2-0-0 ASUN), especially defensively in the second half. In the first half, there was a lot of back-and-forth possession between both teams. However, UWG applied more pressure on the defensive line, leading to outshooting UCA by a 5-3 margin. Both teams left the field with no goals on the board after 45 minutes.
In the second half, the momentum shifted as the Bears ramped up their offensive attack, registering 10 shots in the half. In the 85th minute, UWG committed a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for UCA. Kelly Van Gundy secured the win by placing the ball in the top right corner of the goal.
From UWG's final six shots, Taylor Campbell had two, while Angie Garces, Victoria Grant, Aleyshka Orellano, and Berkleigh Jernigan each had one.
The Wolves will return home on Thursday, September 26th, at 7:00 p.m. to face another ASUN team, North Florida, which has a record of 3-3-3. The game will be available on ESPN+ and live stats.
