SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The University of West Georgia volleyball team bounced back in a big way on Friday, sweeping Idaho as part of the Spartan Invitational.Ā
UWG (7-5, 0-0 ASUN) dominated the Idaho Vandals (1-9, 0-0 Big Sky) in a sweep by the help of Zoë LaBreche, Marley Staats, and Mary Morgan Formby who combined for 27 kills in the sweep.Ā
"Today was a good bounce back for our team.," said head coach Kara Hellmann. "Idaho had a lot of length and I thought we handled that challenge well."
In the opening set, West Georgia jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, and never looked back. The Wolves led wire-to-wire with domination on both sides of the ball. Mary Morgan Formby and Zoë LaBreche were the leaders of this charge by contributing seven kills combined to keep the Vandals from gaining momentum. LaBreche also added four service aces to put the Wolves over Idaho, 25-18.Ā
The next set started out as a back-and-forth battle until the Wolves inserted their dominance against the Vandals. Idaho fought tooth and nail to try to outdo the Wolves by keeping it close up until the 10-10 point.Ā LaBreche would continue to perform at a high level by adding four more kills to her total. UWG would once again beat Idaho, 25-18 to go up 2-0 on the match.Ā
The third set began just like the second as both teams went back-and-forth battling trying to get the upper hand but West Georgia's offense was just too much for the Vandals to handle. Idaho kept the game close as much as they could but the Wolves would pull away and end the match on a 8-1 run that would put the Vandals to rest to win the set 25-18, and to sweep Idaho.Ā
"It was a good finish to our non-conference slate and now we look forward to jumping into ASUN play." HellmannĀ concluded.Ā
The Wolves will be back in action on Friday, September 27 in a conference matchup against Stetson. First serve is slated for 5:00p.m.Ā
