DELAND, FL- The University of West Georgia Volleyball team secured first ever Atlantic Sun Conference win regardless of program on Friday night, winning their matchup against Stetson 3-1 on the road.
After UWG (8-5, 1-0 ASUN) won the first set and got knocked back in the second, the Wolves won sets two and three over Stetson (3-10, 0-2 ASUN) to secure UWG's first ever ASUN conference win.
"We are so proud of this group. Earning the first Division I victory for the university earlier in the year was special but seeing them earn the first ASUN victory for our university is something we are so proud of and I know this means so much to our team," said head coach
Kara Hellmann following the Wolves eighth win of the season.
In the opening set, the Wolves and Hatters went to battle from beginning to end with both teams accumulating counter moves on counter moves deflecting each other's momentum in the set. After the first media timeout, the Wolves were down 15-13, but West Georgia came out of the timeout and went on a 4-0 run by the help of
Sanai Young to put them ahead 17-15. Stetson was able to ice UWG's run by tying the game 20-20 but Zoë LaBreche and
Alex Strating kept their foot on the gas by providing a much needed spark by contributing nine kills in the set to put West Georgia over the hump, 29-27.
In the second set, Stetson came out the gate swinging on the back of Anabelle Standish and company. Starting the set on a 9-2 run left the Hatters in an ideal spot to secure the set. The Hatters would continue their success in the set by producing four blocks that would silence the Wolves offensive runs. Stetson would go on to win the second set, 25-10.
With the third set imitating the first, it was a back and forth battle that had multiple ties. West Georgia would control the lead for majority of the set. Stetson would start to struggle defensively to contain the Wolves.
Mary Morgan Formby, who was a vital piece to West Georgia's offense in this set would go on to produce six kills. The Hatters would try to stay within an arms length of UWG but West Georgia's dominating offense would dismantle the Hatters defense, in the back half of the set. The Wolves would go on a 5-0 run to close out the Hatters, 25-22 to regain the advantage in the match.
The fourth set was an absolute masterclass defensively by the Wolves producing six blocks that would silence the Hatters early.
Sanai Young,
Alex Strating and
Victoria Schmer all contributed to UWG's dominating performance. West Georgia jumped out on to a commanding 7-3 lead and would never look back, The Wolves would dominate the set wire to wire, winning 25-18, and secure their first ever conference win in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Offensively, West Georgia were led by a pack of Wolves including Zoë LaBreche,
Mary Morgan Formby,
Sanai Young, and
Marley Staats who contributed 45 kills combined on a .371 hitting percentage.
Defensively, UWG were led by
Victoria Schmer who ended the match with 28 digs, two digs shy of her career high.
"This group continues to improve each week and answer the call when challenged. We will enjoy this one tonight and then look to re-focus on top ASUN opponent FGCU on Sunday," concluded Hellmann.
West Georgia will be back in action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. versus reigning ASUN Conference Champions Florida Gulf Coast.
