FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team fell to reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Champion, Florida Gulf Coast in straight sets on the road on Sunday.
In the first set, UWG (8-6, 1-1 ASUN) jumped out to a promising start by going up 4-0 on the Eagles. Florida Gulf Coast (11-3, 3-0 ASUN) tried to counter by scoring two points of their own but Mary Morgan Formby and Callaway Cason were producing early offense for West Georgia, with Formby having two kills and Cason assisting on three of the five points scored. UWG's momentum had them leading Florida Gulf Coast 8-3 early in the set. The Eagles would call a timeout and this would extinguish the Wolves hot start. After the timeout, FGCU would go on a 11-2 run and this would shift momentum and ignite Florida Gulf Coast's dynamic offense. The Eagles would continue their hot streak throughout the set and win, 25-16.
The second set would have a similar result with West Georgia jumping out to an early 4-2 lead. Formby would lead the early surge of points for the Wolves offense but the Eagles would then go on a 9-2 run that would ultimately silence any offensive efforts West Georgia would try to produce. FGCU would go on to win the set, 25-12.
The next set, the Eagles would just add on to their fiery offensive play by going on a 10-3 run that would put FGCU in a great position to close out the match. West Georgia would put together a couple offensive plays to try to slow down Florida Gulf Coast but it wasn't enough and the Eagles would go on to sweep the Wolves, 25-11.
Formby led the Wolves with seven kills offensively, and defensively Victoria Schmer recorded 11 digs and Sanai Young registered three blocks.
West Georgia will be back in action on Thursday vs Queens University of Charlotte at The Coliseum with first serve slated at 6:00 p.m.
