Wolves Secure First Division I Victory with Last-Minute Winner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Georgia women's soccer team earned their first Division I victory after a thrilling comeback against Alabama State, securing Coach Mallory Sayre's first career win as a head coach this Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves (1-4) ended their losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Hornets. From the start, UWG played aggressively, putting pressure on Alabama State's defense. The Wolves' energy was evident as they showed a strong desire to win. By halftime, UWG had fired 10 shots, while Alabama State managed just one.

As the second half began with a 0-0 score, both teams pushed for the crucial first goal. It was the Hornets who struck first in the 56th minute, with Ariana James scoring her first goal of the season, assisted by Maddison Chambers.

Despite the setback, the Wolves didn't lose momentum. Instead, their intensity grew, and it paid off. In the 79th minute, Jade Butcher found the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

As time ticked away, the game seemed destined for a draw, but in the 89th minute, Angie Garces scored the game-winning goal, sealing UWG's first Division I victory. The Wolves ended the match with 24 shots, 13 on target, while the Hornets managed only four shots, with three on target.

The win was especially meaningful for Coach Sayre, marking her first career victory as a head coach.

The Wolves will return to the pitch one last time in non-conference play. UWG will face the College of Charleston on Sunday, September 15th, at 1:00 p.m. in Charleston, SC.has context menu
