Wolves Drop Road Game to Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, TN. - The UWG men's basketball team's hard fought road battle with the Bisons of Lipscomb ends with a 86-67 defeat for the Wolves.

The Bisons' (11-6, 3-1 ASUN) explosive second half in which the host outscored UWG 53-29, pushed LU past West Georgia (3-13, 1-3 ASUN).

"It was a tale of two halves. We really executed in the first half, I thought we executed the defensive game plan well," said head coach Dave Moore. "We were trying to take touches away from 41 (Jacob Ognacevic), their best player, and we did that. We battled on the glass, and we got the ball to the paint offensively with high percentage looks. We had an opportunity to stretch our lead in the first half if we make our free throws and a few more open shots. But I thought for the most part we executed exactly what we wanted to do going into the game. To their credit, as a really good team, they responded in the second half."

Shelton Williams-Dryden led the UWG charge tonight with 19 points, while Malcolm Noel and Tamaury Releford followed with 10 and eight points respectively.

For the second consecutive game, Williams-Dryden was perfect from the field to start, sinking all six of his initial shots.

West Georgia's excellent early shooting continued beyond the Milwaukee native, with the team connecting on 69 percent of their shots to propel the Wolves to a 22-14 lead midway through the period.

Going into the break, UWG held a 38-33 advantage after the Bisons were able to capitalize on a final two and a half minute scoring drought by West Georgia. Williams-Dryden led the Wolves in the period with 12 points, draining a perfect 6-for-6 from two-point range. UWG shot 50 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Bisons to 36 percent. The Wolves' bench dominated in the opening period, outscoring the hosts 16-3, led by Kyric Davis' seven points.

Coming out of the break, Lipscomb opened on an 18-3 run to garner its first double-digit lead over the Wolves.

Capitalizing on UWG hitting 20 percent from the field in the half, the Bisons extended their advantage to 57-45 with 11 minutes remaining.

Despite the Wolves continuing to battle, the LU 63 percent field goal and 70 percent three-point rate in the second half was just too much to overcome for West Georgia.

The Bisons went on to win 86-67.

Following the game coach Moore expressed, "Gysai Powell's shot making in the second really hurt us, to go 6-10 from three. Joe Anderson 3-4 from three. They hit 13 threes. That's what these guys do well when they get going offensively. Giving up 53 points in that second half is too much for us to give up and be able to beat good teams. We got to continue to work and get better, but I think overall in a weekend, we battled. We got a good win on the road against Austin Peay, and we had a heck of a first half tonight. We just couldn't sustain it in the second half. We got a lot to build on. We got to keep moving forward."

In addition to Williams-Dryden's 19, the Wolves received 21 points off the bench. Tamaury Releford led this unit with eight points and eight rebounds.

As a team, UWG finished shooting 40 percent from the field and 21 percent from three, whereas Lipscomb posted a 50 percent field goal rate and hit 45 percent from three.

The Wolves return to Georgia to prepare for its road rematch against Florida Gulf Coast which is set for next Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
