Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

Wolves Dealt 82-60 Defeat

Fort Myers, Fla- The UWG men's basketball team dropped tonight's away ASUN contest 82-60 to Florida Gulf Coast, bringing the Wolves' season record against the Eagles to 0-2.

West Georgia (3-15, 1-4 ASUN) never got the spark it needed to get much going offensively, shooting just 35 percent from the field, while FGCU (9-9, 4-1 ASUN) shot 58 percent from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers on their home floor.

UWG was led by Kyric Davis with 12 points, followed by Tauris Watson with nine, Demetrus Johnson II with seven and three other Wolves with six.

Following the game, head coach Dave Moore stated, "Florida Gulf Coast is really good. They were very efficient to start the game, almost hitting 68 percent from the field in the first half. We didn't have the horsepower to match. We shoot 38 percent, they shoot 68 percent, and that's why you're down 20 at halftime. We also turned the ball over too much early on. We turned the ball over in the first five possessions of the game. And that's not going to do it on the road against a very good team."

FGCU opened the game with a dominant 13-0 run, establishing control early on. Dallion Johnson spearheaded this surge by attacking the basket to score either close-range shots or draw UWG fouls

The biggest difference that contributed to this double-digit lead was the Wolves giving up six turnovers in the opening four minutes.

UWG continued to battle, but the Eagles' 68 percent field goal clip was just too much for the Wolves to keep pace.

At the break, the hosts held a 47-27 lead. Malcolm Noel and Kolten Griffin both posted a team-high six points, while FGCU was led by Dallion Johnson with 17.

Coming out of the break, FGCU started on a 12-3 scoring run to open the period.

Before West Georgia could lock back in, the hosts found themselves up with a 63-36 advantage as the Wolves' shots would not fall. At this point, UWG was hitting 30 percent from two and just 14 percent from long range in the period.

FGCU went on to beat West Georgia 82-60, finishing the regular season 2-0 against UWG.

Kyric Davis led the way tonight with 12 points, his most in a single game since Brewton-Parker (Dec. 21). Davis also posted a team-best 44 percent from field goal range and a perfect four-for-four from the line.

The Eagles were led by Dallion Johnson with 21 points.

As a team, the Wolves were out-rebounded 43-24 and out-shot in the paint 44-20. This, combined with the Eagles hitting 58 percent from the field was the difference in tonight's matchup.

"We got to regroup and come back together. We have some road weariness and some guys are sick. Hopefully we have enough character to bounce back on Saturday," said coach Moore. "We got to respond with character. Good teams do. You take a beating like this, good teams bounce back. We have to bounce back with toughness and character. We have to play together."

The Wolves finishes off its four-game road stretch with an away matchup against Stetson this Saturday at 4 p.m.
