Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

West Georgia Falls to Hatters in Florida

DELAND Fla. - The West Georgia Wolves wrapped up its four game ASUN road stretch falling to Hatters of Stetson University 82-78 this Saturday in the Insight Credit Union Arena at Edmunds Center.

Despite an incredible comeback effort by UWG (3-16, 1-5 ASUN), in which the Wolves erased a 25-point early deficit, SU (5-15, 3-3 ASUN) managed to outlast West Georgia to take the conference win.

Tonight, UWG was led by Kyric Davis with a career-high 28 points, shooting a season-best 53 percent from the field in addition to hitting 57 percent from distance and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Following Davis, Demetrus Johnson II tied his career-high of 12 points, hitting 44 percent from the field. The Wolves also received ten points from Rickey Ballard and Shelton Williams-Dryden. Williams-Dryden secured his season's fourth double-double after pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.

Josh Massey led the way for the Hatters, posting a team-high 17 points. He was trailed by Abramo Canka with 16 points and Jamie Phillips Jr. with 15.

Following the game, head coach Dave Moore stated, "I'm proud of the guys and their effort, but we can't spot good teams at home 25 points in the first half. We had some really good performances. We finally got four guys in double figures scoring the ball. Kyric Davis had a big night. Gave us a chance to win the game. I'm really proud of that, but we have to be better at starting games."

Echoing last Thursday's game, the Wolves found themselves in an early double-digit hole with turnovers and fouls plaguing the team.

Five early turnovers, combined with hosts shooting 85 percent from field goal range and a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, gave Stetson a 31-6 lead 10 minutes into the contest.

Facing this large deficit, the Wolves put ther hard hats on, and went to work digging themselves out.

Coming off the bench, Brady Hardewig ignited UWG with an open three-pointer, assisted by a steal from Williams-Dryden.

Before Stetson could react, the Wolves were suddenly in striking distance. A surge of scoring from the bench propelled UWG to a quick 20-6 run, cutting the Hatters' lead to 37-26 with three minutes left in the half.

Heading into the break, UWG trailed just 44-36 after going on a 30-13 scoring run in the final ten minutes. Through the opening period, West Georgia's bench outscored the Hatters 19-10. Williams-Dryden led UWG with eight points in the half.

Going into the second, the Wolves continued to nip at the heels of the Hatters, slowly draining the hosts lead.

With under ten minutes remaining, a crisp Williams-Dryden pass hit Demetrus Johnson II cutting to the basket for the junior guard to knot the game up at 62-62 with a driving layup.

At the seven minute mark, the Wolves took its first lead of the game at 67-65 on a pair of Kyric Davis free throws.

Like a man on a mission, Davis looked unstoppable in the second half, scoring 12 straight UWG points to give the Wolves a 74-71 advantage at the final media timeout.

Though they had given up a 25-point lead, the hosts continued to fight back tenaciously.

After grabbing a last minute 79-78 advantage over the Wolves, UWG had no choice but to send Stetson to the line.

The hosts would go on to knock down their shots, securing a tight 82-78 win over the Wolves.

As mentioned, Kyric Davis absolutely went off tonight, scoring a career-high 28 points, with 21 of them coming in the second half.

UWG finished shooting 44 percent from the field, 30 percent from three and a season-best 88 percent from the free throw line. SU shot 56 percent from the field, 61 percent from distance and 68 percent from the line. The West Georgia bench wrapped up the game outscoring the Hatters 45-10.

For the first time since January 4, the Wolves return to The Coliseum to host Jacksonville in their inaugural meeting on the hardwood this Thursday at 7 p.m.

"We are excited to play Jacksonville. They are a very good team. Really well coached. They play really hard and have a lot of talented guys," said coach Moore. "It will be great to be at home. Hopefully we have a good crowd. The students are back on campus, and we are really going to need them in The Coliseum to make it a great environment."
