CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG women's basketball ran into a red-hot Florida Gulf Coast squad on Saturday afternoon, falling 95-62 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
West Georgia (7-10, 1-5 ASUN) played well offensively, shooting 25-of-55 (45 percent) from the field, but FGCU (15-3, 6-0 ASUN) poured in a season-high 15 three-pointers, finishing the game nearly 50 percent from beyond the arc to earn their eighth straight win overall and 39th consecutive league victory.
The 62 points from UWG marked tied FGCU's season-high for points allowed, and the Wolves were led by 14 each from Amanda Blake and K'Nari Holliday.
Aside from FGCU's three-point prowess, the Eagles had a big day on the glass, pulling down 44 total rebounds and 21 offensive boards while limiting the Wolves to 21 total rebounds. FGCU would translate their offensive rebounding efforts to 25 second chance points.
Both teams were scoring well in the opening quarter, combining for 46 points, but it was FGCU who led, 27-19 after 10 minutes.
The middle quarters is where FGCU pulled away, outscoring the Wolves 20-11 in the second to lead 47-30 at the break, and then extended the lead by holding UWG to 10 third quarter points while adding 30 to their tally.
FGCU's largest lead of the game came early in the final quarter, but the Wolves would win the fourth quarter, 22-18 while shooting nearly 60 percent in that final frame.
Blake had five rebounds to go with her 14 points while Grace O'Gara's five assists led the way for UWG in that category.
The Eagles had five in double-figures, led by 14 from Kamari Mitchell-Steen. Lauryn Taylor had 11 points and 12 rebounds to register a double-double for the Eagles.
West Georgia now takes to the road, heading to Jacksonville for a 6:30 p.m. showdown on Thursday, January 23.
