DELAND, Fla. - It was a tough start to 2025 and the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule for the UWG women's basketball team as the Wolves fell 79-64 to the Stetson Hatters in Thursday night's ASUN opener at the Edmunds Center.
West Georgia (6-6, 0-1 ASUN) fell behind early and never could catch Stetson (7-6, 1-0 ASUN), who shot nearly 60 percent and improved to 6-1 on their home court this season.
For the second consecutive game, UWG was led by senior Zuriyah Davis who led all scorers with 23 and hit five three-pointers on the night. It was the 12th time Davis has eclipsed the 20-point mark in her career and second consecutive.
Stetson opened up a 12-3 lead over the game's first seven minutes, but UWG clawed back to within five at 14-9 before the end of the opening quarter.
Both offenses heated up in the second, combining for 46 points, but it was Stetson who outscored the Wolves by six to extend their lead. It looked like the Hatters would close on a 15-7 run and take a 14-point lead into the break until Davis buried a three with nine ticks remaining to make it a 40-29 halftime lead for Stetson.
In the second half, UWG quickly came out and fought to get the deficit to four on another Davis three-pointer at the 6:55 mark. But an 11-4 run over the final five minutes gave Stetson the advantage after three, 59-47.
The Hatters extended the lead to as much as 21 in the final quarter, but never got closer the final margin of 15 points.
UWG was plagued by a tough-night shooting, finishing the night with a 37.5 percent clip from the field, their second-lowest of the season and lowest since the loss at Georgia Tech back on November 14.
Along with Davis' 23, UWG's Sydne Tolbert matched a career-high with 15 points while K'Nari Holliday chipped in with seven. Freshman Destiny Jones continued her dominance on the boards, securing her fifth double-digit rebounding performance with 10. Grace O'Gara's five assists led the way in that department.
Stetson was led by 21 from Cameron Thomas, who entered the game as the ASUN's second-leading scorer and has three-straight 20-point games.
West Georgia is back in action on Saturday, taking on perennial power Florida Gulf Coast, who won their 34th consecutive ASUN game on Thursday night against Queens.
Tip-time from Fort Myers on Saturday is set for 4 p.m. inside Alico Arena.
