CLARKSVILLE, TN. - The Wolves of West Georgia held on to win 72-68 over Austin Peay State University on Thursday evening, earning its first ASUN victory and Division I road win in program history.
Following the historic win, head coach
Dave Moore stated, "It's a huge step forward for the program. It has been a while since we had a road win. To get our first ASUN win on the road against a quality opponent like Austin Peay, who I think was picked second in our league preseason, is a big step forward for us. Our guys stuck together, persevered. For us to go on the road and lead that game for 37 minutes is an accomplishment. I couldn't be more proud of the guys."
Shelton Williams-Dryden finished with a career-high 27 points, shooting 68 percent from the field.
Rickey Ballard secured his first double-double after tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds.
West Georgia's (3-13, 1-2 ASUN) control of the paint tonight was the difference maker, with UWG outscoring APSU 44-24 (6-10, 1-2 ASUN) in the low post.
The Wolves opened the away contest with a 15-6 lead at the second media timeout, capitalizing on APSU's 9.1 percent shooting from the field by hitting a 70 percent field goal clip as a team.
Leading the charge was Williams-Dryden, sinking six points on his opening three shots.
The Governors stormed back to tie the game at 18-18 following seven early UWG turnovers, but the Wolves quickly answered.
UWG finished the first holding a 34-30 lead with Williams-Dryden posting a team-high 13 points while shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Ballard trailed slightly behind, tallying 10 points while hitting 60 percent from field goal and 66.7 percent from distance. The Wolves dominated the paint, outscoring the Governors 24-2 down low.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Williams-Dryden continued to push the pace for the Wolves, scoring eight of the opening 12 UWG points.
Despite the tough APSU team fighting back to bring the game within striking distance, the Wolves continued to throw punches hoping to deliver the knockout blow.
Senior forward
Kolten Griffin came in clutch late for UWG, knocking down a contested layup and a pair of free throws to put the Governors to sleep in the final possessions.
The Wolves held on to win 72-68, securing West Georgia's first ever ASUN victory.
As a team, UWG shot a consistent 53 percent from the field while limiting APSU to 39 percent.
"We shot the ball well, shot it well in both halves. We were consistent. We had consistent production," said coach Moore. "
Shelton Williams-Dryden was terrific, scoring 27 points and six rebounds. He was huge for us, he always is.
Rickey Ballard had 13 points, 10 rebounds, all defensive. That's a huge stat. And we had guys come off our bench and step up.
Demetrus Johnson II,
Kyric Davis,
Tamaury Releford helped us. It was a team effort."
Tonight's away matchup marks the first of four consecutive games on the road for UWG. The Wolves stay in Tennessee to face off against Lipscomb University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
